This diploma thesis analyzes the PLC communications in various scenarios. The first part of the thesis describes the principle of narrowband and broadband communication and the analysis of electrical lines. The next part describes the NS-3 framework, simulation scenarios for establishment the effect of branches and other parameters on the baud rate. The last part determines the minimum number of repeaters and their location on the extended topology.
PLC system for Smart Metering
Bijotová, Kateřina ; Sláčik, Ján (referee) ; Mlýnek, Petr (advisor)
This thesis deals with PLC communication, presents pros and cons of this technology. The thesis describes several basic standards of the narrowband communication and broadband HomePlug AV2 standard. It groups the technology according to frequency band. Also, it brings summary of commercial products and development kits which are using PLC technology. The thesis contains the description of network testing to RFC 2544 recommendation and its application onto narrowband Linksys PLEK500 modems using NetBlazer tester which took place in laboratory of Brno University of Technology’s Department of Telecommunications. The same PLC modems are used in a second series of experimental measurements in home environment. This thesis also deals with comparison of narrowband PLC standards PRIME and G3 whilst exposed to different transmission conditions as defined by pre-established measurement scenarios. Said comparison was attained by measurements using Atmel’s multi-carrier PLC kit SAM4CP16C-EK. In the closing section of the thesis the results obtained by said measurements are consulted with conclusions provided by contemporary PLC-oriented publications.
Intelligent system for remote data collection with PLC
Benešl, Lukáš ; Sláčik, Ján (referee) ; Mlýnek, Petr (advisor)
Bachelor thesis deals with PowerLine Communication (PLC), analyzes its advantages and disadvantages of this technology. Shows the frequency division according to the frequency range in which they work. The work includes a methodology of PLC communications testing according to Request For Comments (RFC) 1242 and RFC 2544 standards. Tests of the individual modems were measured in the household on a real network. All modems measured the same topology, and the results were appropriately processed in the form of well-arranged tables and charts. In conclusion, the individual conclusions from the measurements are always discussed. For the measurement of narrowband PLCs with multiple carriers on PRIME and G3 standards, the SAM4CP16C-EK development kit from Atmel was used. Narrowband modems, with single carrier, are represented by the PLC MT49R model manufactured by ModemTec. For broadband modems, the HomePlug AV2 standard was selected in comparison with HomePlug AV. Within the HomePlug AV2, the I2SE PLC Stamp 1200 micro EVK and Linksys PLEK500 development kit were used. For the lower standard of HomePlug AV, PLC was used by COMFAST.
Universal communication unit
Ružička, Michal ; Mlýnek, Petr (referee) ; Sláčik, Ján (advisor)
This bachelor thesis is going to deal with communication over the power network. Aim of this project is to clarify this issue and consequently to use the acquired knowledge for desingning own communication unit. The basic parameters of power network which influence this type of communication are being described in this thesis. The concept of universal communication unit is created. Pheripheral solutions are chosen for this concept and the given device will be made of them. The custom communication unit is created on this basis. The funkcionality of this unit is tested in the work.
Methodology for PLC evaluation in Smart Metering
Rusz, Martin ; Sláčik, Ján (referee) ; Mlýnek, Petr (advisor)
The aim of this work is to acquire basic knowledge about PLC technology and to make a set of measurements focusing on the main parameters of this technology as well as to perform a set of short-term measurements of PLC communication in Smart Metering systems and to design a methodology for testing two real systems. Measurements were made in laboratory conditions on prepared tasks that covered all types of technology, both broadband and narrowband with one or more carriers. In addition, a methodology for testing PLC communications in Smart Metering systems was developed, which was applied to two systems using different technologies. On the basis of the results achieved, it was decided which of the two systems is more suitable for real use according to the methodology and set of short-term measurements.
Modeling and simulation of PLC in Network Simulator-3 for Smart Metering
Petrůj, Jakub ; Sláčik, Ján (referee) ; Mlýnek, Petr (advisor)
The diploma thesis deals with analysis and modeling of power line communication using NS-3. The introduction part summarizes basic information about PLC technology, distribution grids, and broadband standards. This is followed by the analysis of the transmission line and modulation method. Furthermore, the simulation tool and possibilities of its extension are described. The influence of different cross-section and type of line on channel capacity is examined in the practical part of this paper. The influence of repeaters on bitrate is examined as well. The medium-voltage line was implemented and further scenarios dealing with bitrate or optimal level of noise. The focus of the last part is to find the repeaters on the path and to determine the capacity and bitrate on the path of the large topology.

Modem for powerline communication
Sláčik, Ján ; Mlýnek, Petr (referee) ; Kolka, Zdeněk (advisor)
This bachelor thesis is dealing with the standards and usable circuits applications for a powerline communication, which are currently available. Principle of this kind of communication is described for default supply network 230 V/50 Hz. This work is also describing several available modems which can be used for this type of communication. The properties of the standards PRIME and the G3-PLC, which are presently at disposal, are specified, measured and compared with each other in this project. The concentrator based on the G3-PLC standard extended about radio interface was designed. Afterwards this device was tested in various topologies and interference scenarios. The graphical interfaces, which allow the transfer measurements in multiple modes are described is this work as well. The entire measurements were realized in a real conditions for both tested modems. The results of these measurements are validating the purpose of each standard and its configuration.
