Study of aerosol properties with high time resolution

This thesis focuses on physical and chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosol measured with high time resolution. Size distribution, chemical composition, and volatility of submicron particles were studied in relation to meteorological conditions and other factors. To reach higher variability in ambient conditions, we considered atmospheric aerosol during two seasons of the year (summer and winter) and at two different locations (suburban site Prague Suchdol and rural site Košetice). Measurement during two different seasons enabled us to better distinguish the influence of seasonal sources such as domestic heating in winter and increased biogenic emissions in summer. Also, seasonal differences in meteorological conditions mainly in case of temperature, humidity, and solar radiation were shown to play a role in aerosol characteristics. A comparison of aerosol properties at two different measurement sites, namely a rural and suburban, enabled us to better characterize the role of background aerosol and the influence of the city. Furthermore, a transformation of aerosol particles entering indoors from outdoors was also studied within this thesis. Comparison of Atmospheric Aerosol Volatility at a Rural Site in Central Europe.

Volatility is an important characteristic of atmospheric aerosols as it affects their origin, lifetime and removal. Accurate description of aerosol volatilities is important for models calculating condensation of semi-volatile species and it also enables better identification of aerosol sources (Wu et al., 2009). However, our understanding of volatilities of organic atmospheric aerosols and the related processes is still rather poor (Han et al., 2016.

A Kitchen Degreaser Containing Monoethanolamine Can Alter Indoor Aerosol Composition for Days.

Using of such degreaser and consequences related to indoor aerosol are described in this study. Monoethanolamine, a part of a commercial degreaser being used in kitchens, was able to replace ammonium in its sulfate and nitrate salts in the indoor environment, while those salts usually form up to half of PM2.5 aerosol mass indoors.

Transformation of Aerosol Particles during Transport from Outdoor to Indoor Environment.

One summer (2014) and one winter (2015) campaign (both lasting three weeks) were conducted to assess the indoor/outdoor physical and chemical properties of aerosol in an unoccupied apartment. The main purpose of these campaigns was to observe the changes in aerosol particles before and after their transport from outdoors to indoors. The most important parameter – the I/O ratio was obtained from indoor/outdoor measurements of aerosol number size distribution as well as chemical composition. The I/O ratios can reveal the changes in particle size and physicochemical characteristics indoors in relation to the size distribution and chemical composition outdoors, and physical parameters such as wind speed, temperature, and RH.

Seasonal Differences in Volatility of Atmospheric Aerosol at a rural measurement site Košetice.

Volatility is an important characteristics of atmospheric aerosol because it affects formation, conversion and removal of aerosol particles. This study deals with differences in volatility of atmospheric aerosol at rural measurement site Košetice. Analyzes are based on high-time measurements of atmospheric aerosol, including an aerosol mass spectrometer and a scanning mobility particle sizer. Not only the time variation of mass concentration, but also the daily course of pollutants and the influence of meteorological conditions are discussed.

Comparison of Atmospheric Aerosol Volatility at a Suburban and Rural Measurement Site.

One of the most important characteristics of atmospheric aerosols is their volatility. Volatility affects the formation, life time, and removal of aerosol particles (Huffman et al., 2009). Accurate description of volatility of atmospheric aerosols can lead to a better identification of their sources and it is also crucial for models incorporating condensation and aging of aerosols. However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding aerosol properties such as volatility especially in case of organic aerosols. To increase our understanding of aerosols volatility, we have performed summer (21.8.-2.10.2012; 17.6.-18.8.2014) and winter (19.2.-28.5.2013; 9.1.-13.3.2014) measurement campaigns with a thermodenuder at a suburban site in Prague Suchdol and at a rural site Košetice, respectively.

Particle Size, Mass and Chemical Transitions from an Outdoor to Indoor Environment in Prague, Czech Republic with Attention to Nitrate

As people spend most of their time indoors it’s important to understand how outdoor originating particulate can migrate indoors, their relative abundance indoors and how physico-chemical processes acting upon particulate can change the overall aerosol composition. Species volatility can complicate indoor data, change mass size distribution profiles, and implant artifacts on data measurements, enhancing uncertainty on results. This research describes the findings from high temporal resolution I/O, offline and online measurements, identifies outdoor aerosol loading dynamics and describes proportional compositions indoors relative to calculated I/O ratios.

Highly Time-Resolved Aerosol Measurement at a Suburban Site in Prague

Highly time-resolved measurements of atmospheric aerosols are important as they enable us to elucidate the aerosol sources and lifecycle processes (Zhang, 2011). In our study we carried out two six-week measurements of submicron fraction of nonrefractory atmospheric aerosol. The measurement was performed with 1-minute resolution and analysed with respect to influence of meteorological conditions. The measurement was done as a part of a pan-European project ACTRIS.
