Phytoprophylaxis in prostate cancer
Zadražilová, Lucie ; Heráček, Jiří (advisor)
Prostate cancer belongs to the most common type of cancer among men. In the last years its incidence as well as the mortality has increased. Therefore it is essential to pay attention to the prevention of this disease and use all the available resources to educate doctors and patients about this. Each year we diagnose 2.6 million of new patients in Europe. The incidence of cancer is increasing in higher age. More than 75% of newly identified cases of prostate cancer affects men over 65. Phytoprophylaxis in prostate cancer involves a series of measures through which we can prevent disease on the basis of the use of extracts from plants, plant parts themselves or through changes in diet in favor of plant-based foods reducing the risk of prostate cancer.
Hormonal profile in men with localized and locally advanced prostate cancer
Heráček, Jiří ; Urban, Michael (advisor) ; Bílek, Radovan (referee) ; Hanuš, Tomáš (referee) ; Marenčák, Jozef (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to understanding the mechanisms and regulatory pathways by which hormones influence prostate tissue. Includes a total of 4 experimental work dealing with hormonal environment in men with prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Prostate cancer screening in the Czech Republic - pros and cons
Hájek, Přemysl ; Heráček, Jiří (advisor)
Over the past few decades, prostate cancer has developed into one of the major concerns that health-policy authorities have to deal with. In the western world it is recognised to be the second-leading cause of cancer-death in male population. In Europe itself, an estimated 2.6 million new cases are diagnosed each year, accounting for 9 % of all cancer-deaths among men. The Czech Republic is not an exception in these findings. Since the increase in incidence is likely to be due to longer life expectations, it is understandable that the costs related to this diagnosis will escalate. The urge to develop an effective screening test that would provide a drop in morbidity and mortality rates is more than obvious. The problem is not in finding a method of required efficiency, but a method that could distinguish between the non-life threatening ant the life threatening carcinoma. In considerable number of cases, the cancer progresses so slowly that it remains a pathological diagnosis until the patient dies of other cause. In these cases, the radical intervention, frequently leading to severe complication as urine incontinence and impotence, is more likely to be burdening than life saving. And this is just one of the reasons why there is no widely accepted policy on mass screening for prostate cancer.

Quality of life in patients after radical orchiectomy
Kostrouch, David ; Heráček, Jiří (advisor)
Although testicular tumors represent only 1% of all malignancies that affect the male population , but in the age group of 20-44 years reaching their share of 23%. They represent the most frequent tumor of the white population in that age group. Orchiectomy is critical both in diagnosis and in treatment testicular tumors . It is almost impossible to examine the patient merely from the point of view consequences of radical orchiectomy , since only a small group of patients will experience only this surgery . Almost an integral part of the subsequent therapy is adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy ( which significantly affect patient). Furthermore itself cancer has a negative effect on the organism. For these reasons, the quality of life of patients seen only in terms of radical orchiectomy , but We have the quality of life of patients after orchiectomy look of a comprehensive Looking testicular tumors . We must consider the consequences of other therapeutic modalities. The group of patients who survived testicular cancer ( in English - testicular - cancer survivors TCS) are an interesting group to monitor the quality of life for several reasons. Treatment of testicular tumors in 90 % successful and consequently have the same TCS predicted life expectancy as well old men from the healthy population. TCS...
Estrogens in environment, their impact on male fertility
Daniel, Michal ; Heráček, Jiří (advisor)
Build-up of estrogen and other endocrine disruptors in our habitat has been recently an issue widely debated not only amongst health professionals but also by main stream media. Their impact on wild animals has been observed and documented for some time now and several studies on rodents and other mammals have demonstrated a highly probable connection between exposure in early stages of development to endocrine disrupting chemicals and abnormal sexual maturation of males (hypospadia, cryptorchism), as well as impaired male reproductive functions. Epidemiological studies have been claiming significant drop in sperm count and quality of spermatozoa in last several decades, increased incidence of testicular cancer, which is being among other causes attributed also to pooling of endocrine disruptors in the environment. This reasoning brings a lot of controversy since the respective chemicals are by-products of substances commonly used in agriculture and industry and replacing them is expensive and logistically challenging. It is also quite difficult to determine and quantify the long term effects of specific chemicals on human body since the population is being exposed to not just one substance but to a whole cocktail of them and the symptomatology is subjected to age, length of the exposure, quantity of the...
