Italian literature does not only deal with literary texts in Italian language, but also with texts written in several Italian dialects. The objective of this thesis aims at introducing the vernacular works by Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, the main representative of the XIX century literary production in Roman dialect. The first chapter deals with the initial linguistic phase in Italy. It will present different types of dialect and, in particular, it will focus on the urban Roman one as well as on the specific features of its use as language adopted by the lowest social strata, that is the common people. It will also briefly cover the linguistic situation in Rome from a historical perspective and the influence of the Tuscan dialect on this city. Finally it will introduce a brief history of the literature written in roman dialect. The second chapter will focus on the historical development of the Papal State between the XVIII and the XIX centuries, during which it was considered as one of the most underdeveloped state of Europe due to its isolation and conservatism.
