Efectiveness of education of mothers in Strakonice Hospital, Inc. about newborna baby care in home environment.
BLÁHOVÁ, Miloslava
The current trend is the shortest possible stay in a medical facility. This also involves mothers with babies after birth. The five-day hospitalization of mothers with newborns after spontaneous delivery has shortened to 72 hours. In maternity wards mothers are educated about newborn baby care by midwives, pediatric nurses. The education is focused also on care in home environment. After leaving hospital for home the entire responsibility for care of the newborn is relegated to its mother. Is she ready for this situation? The aim of the thesis was to determine if education of mothers is sufficient and if mothers are able to use properly the obtained information about newborn baby care in home environment. How a mother can cope with a problem situation without medical personnel at hand. In the thesis a combination of quantitative and qualitative research is used, five goals and five research questions were set up. For data collection anonymous questionnaires were distributed to mothers, who gave birth to a baby in Strakonice Hospital, during the period of confinement and then after discharge from hospital in the first weeks in home environment, and non-standardized interviews were also conducted. The interviews were carried out with mothers in home environment, where effectiveness of the education about newborn baby care provided in hospital was examined. The results of the quantitative research are shown in graphs, the results of the qualitative research are presented in individual case studies and tables, where individual differences are assessed. The set up goals were met in the form of results of the field research investigation and also hypotheses, on which the goals had been based, were confirmed. Based on the quantitative survey three hypotheses may be established. The first hypothesis: In newborn care in home environment the most useful piece of information it that on breastfeeding. The second hypothesis: Mothers in home environment lack continuity of community care. The third hypothesis: Mothers ask for creation of a clear educational material about care of a newborn baby in home environment. The findings of the research could be used as basic information to create educational materials for women after giving birth for the confinement period and for the care of a newborn in home environment. Findings from the research could be used as one of arguments for negotiations with insurance companies to extend community care both for mothers in confinement and newborn babies in home environment.
