The aim of this diploma thesis is to evaluate the intensity of international trade of the European Union in relation to the institutional (legal) environment of individu-al countries. The Heritage Foundation's Economic Freedom Index describes the quality of the country's institutional environment. The intensity of international trade is expressed as the degree of openness that represents the share of export and import in gross domestic product. Correlation and regression analysis are used to quantify the relationships between variables. The final model is based on panel data from 1996 to 2017 for the 27 countries of the European Union, with only Malta being excluded. The influence of the institutional environment is com-pared with other determinants of the degree of openness. In my thesis I used the following variables: gross domestic product per capita, share of the productive population aged 15-64, investments as a percentage of GDP, exchange rates and human development index (HDI). The result of this work is the finding that the institutional environment positively influences trade exchange, but the relation-ship with the degree of openness has not been proven.
