The master of the Budnany altarpiece and context of workshop praxis at the end of the 15th century in Bohemia

The Master of the Budnany Altarpiece (in other circumstances also called Master of the Vejprnice Altarpiece) appears to be a painting workshop operating in the 1590s, probably in Prague or hypothetically in Cheb (Eger). It is a construct created by art historians on the basis of a group of surviving works that show significant stylistic similarities. It includes three torsionally preserved painted altarpieces. These are the Budňany altarpiece, the Pruhonice altarpiece and the altarpiece of the Knights of the Cross monastery. Mostly these are works of lower quality, which, according to current interpretation, illustrate the average production of Prague workshops at the end of the 15th century. Stylistically, they are strongly derived from the production of the Nuremberg Painting Centre, but also, allegedly, from the problematically defined contemporary "court" painting in Prague. The so-called "Vejprnice panel", originally the main part of another painted altarpiece, was also included in the group for a time because of its stylistic affinity, which transformed the naming of the anonymous workshop master. The author of this conception was Jaroslav Pešina, who was by far the most active on the subject, most recently in 1978, and this thesis thus partly polemics with his conclusions. Landscape and space in the work of the Master of the Litomerice Altar
Šindlář, Ondřej ; Nespěšná Hamsíková, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Ottová, Michaela (referee)
My bachelor thesis will be devoted to formativ of space and landscape in the paintings of the Master of the Litoměřice Altar, an important landmark in the history of Czech painting. This is very clear not just in the figural komponent but also in his approach to space and landscape formation. All existing researchers have pointed it out. The landscape component of the image is closely related to its space construction, for this reason I will discuss this matter in the Master of the Litoměřice Altarpiece more complexly. The prerequisite is the study of the Master's available paintings, art-historical literature, and a summary of previous research in the first part. To put it in the context of the period, a brief excursion into landscape component in the Czech painting preceding the Master of the Litoměřice Altar will follow. The main content of my work will be an analysis of landscape and space in the variol works of the Master of the Litoměřice Altar from the point of view of his possible origins as well as his ways and means of space construction. As the thesis will deal with aspects primarily related to the formal side of the work, mainly formal and comparative approaches will be applied. Also the technical and technological aspects will be taken into account.
