The use of drama as a means of increasing students' engagement in speaking activities
Šmídová, Kristýna ; Müller Dočkalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Uličná, Klára (referee)
This thesis deals with the use of drama techniques in order to improve students' speaking skills. The purpose of the study is to determine whether the use of fictional situations and characters can provide students with the incentive and motivation to speak and help them with their willingness to communicate. The main indicator for this will be the extent to which the students who otherwise rarely volunteer to engage in oral communicative activities speak during a lesson. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part first provides a brief introduction to teaching speaking, an overview of reasons why some students might be more reluctant to speak than others, and a summary of recommendations of various authors on the topic of teaching speaking skills and how to increase student talking time. It then further looks into the findings from existing research on communication breakdowns and the use of drama as a motivation for students to speak. The practical part describes an action research project conducted by the author with seventh-grade pupils of a private primary school, where she teaches. The research was motivated by difficulties the author was facing when teaching speaking, when several students in the class were being shy or were repetitively refusing to participate in speaking...
Vasodilatory effects of catechol derivatives ex vivo

Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology Student: Kristýna Šmídová Supervisor: doc. PharmDr. Jana Pourová, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Vasodilatory effects of catechol derivatives ex vivo Polyphenols, including flavonoids, are a broad group of natural substances with significant effects on human health, including the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Their metabolites can also be active, with clinical effects which may even exceed those of the parent compounds. The aim of this diploma thesis was to verify vasodilatory effects of one flavonoid metabolite type, a series of catechol derivatives and elucidate the mechanism of action of the most potent substance. The established ex vivo method of isolated aortic rings of Wistar rats with isotonic registration of tissue contraction and dilation (software S.P.E.L. Advanced Kymograph Software) was used. In the experiments with the rat aorta precontracted by norepinephrin, 3-methoxycatechol was the most effective vasodilator (EC50 = 7,6 µmol.l-1). In the mechanistic study, we found out that its effect is endothelium-independent, and that 3-methoxycatechol enhances the vasodilatory effect of sodium nitropruside. However, the specific mechanism responsible for vasodilation was not identified and...
English Family in view of Czech au pair
ŠMÍDOVÁ, Kristýna
The main aim of the bachelor thesis is to show the insight to upbringing of pre-school children in England in comparisons with the Czech methods of upbringing. The theoretical part of the bachelor thesis deals with a family example, its functions as well as methods of how to bring up a child and general upbringing of pre-schoolchildren. The practical part is focused on an English family living in England and their upbringing ways within a Czech au pair´s perspective while revealing my own one-year experience in the family. There is also a variety of other Czech au pairs experience shown in the thesis. Qualitative method providing an open-question questionnaire was used for the practical part. In the discussion part there is a comparison between Czech professional opinions and the reality which specific Czech au pairs experienced in English families. The survey has shown that the situation in English families is considerably different from the reality Czech au pairs are familiar with. The survey has as well shown that in most cases a liberal style of upbringing is applied in English families seen and experienced for the first time by the majority of Czech au pairs.

Reeducating university students' mechanical knowledge in mathematical analysis
Šmídová, Kristýna ; Vondrová, Naďa (advisor) ; Kvasz, Ladislav (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the didactics of mathematical analysis. The thesis describes selected observations from the reeducation in an individual tutoring environment of for- mal knowledge of university students in the field of calculus. The aim of the thesis is to describe what formal knowledge appeared, to describe and evaluate selected reeducation interventions and on this basis formulate appropriate methodological recommendation. In the first chapter we deal with the contradiction between definition and concept concept of students, we outline how to convey to students the purpose of definitions and we suggest how to teach students to work with definitions properly, including understanding quan- tified propositions. In the second chapter we present the theory of process and concept together with the generic model theory. In the third chapter we explain the methods of work with students and the methods of the analysis of videos from tutoring. In the fourth chapter we analyze cognitive processes of the concept of sequence limits. KEYWORDS reeducation, individual tutoring, mechanical knowledge, calculus, definitions, quantified proposition, infinity, sequence, limit 1
Mountain climbing theorem

Title: Mountain climbing theorem Author: Kristýna Šmídová Department: Department of Mathematical Analysis Supervisor: Mgr. Benjamin Vejnar, Ph.D., Department of Mathematical Ana- lysis Abstract: The subject of this theses is the so-called Muntain Climbers' Pro- blem. We ask for which pairs of continuous functions f, g : [0,1] → [0,1] such that f(0) = g(0) = 0 and f(1) = g(1) = 1 there exist some functions k, h with the same properties such that f (k(x)) = g (h(x)) for all x in the inter- val of [0,1]. For piecewise injective functions we prove the existence using a convenient graph model and handshaking lemma. For locally non-constant functions we provide a constructive proof using uniform convergence. There is also an example of pair of continuons functions for which there exists no suitable pair of functions that solve the problem. The aim is to provide a clear and visual explanation of all the mathematical constructions included. Keywords: continuous function, mountain climber, uniform convergence, hand- shaking lemma
