Typology of female characters in The Hive
Čertíková, Veronika ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Kotuľáková, Lívia (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to create a typology of female characters in the novel The Hive written by the Spanish author Camilo José Cela. First, we discuss the historical context of the position of women in post-war (economically and morally devastated) Spain, which the author reflects, and compare this context with the stories of female characters in the book. Subsequently, we relate the stories of the female characters to those of their male counterparts and indicate how they are similar and how they differ; we also consider the types of characteristics the narrator emphasizes when describing the characters. The core part of the thesis is the typology itself, in which we divide the female characters into categories based on their economic conditions and family status; we focus on rich and poor women, women in partnership relations, married women and widows, while poor women are the largest group.
