Homogamy and heterogamy of marriages from demographic perspectives

Kateřina Krpatová: Homogamie a heterogamie manželských svazků z pohledu demografie Homogamy and heterogamy of marriages from demographic perspectives Abstract This thesis aims at evaluating homogamy and heterogamy while solemnising marriage, depending on the characteristics of the newly-married couple, and their transformation in the last quarter of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century in the Czech republic. Based on the theoretical concepts related to the selection of partner, the causes of the selection of a homogamous partner in the recent years are outlined. The period chosen shows a number of changes both in the characteristics of the marriage rate and within the society in general. However, the transformation of the society to take place from 1979 to 2008, according to the data analysis results, had no complex and unilateral impact on the development of homogamy according to the age, education and nationality. For each of the homogamy types described, a trend in their development was described based on the data, which was subsequently confronted with the theoretical premises specified in the first part of the thesis.
