Numerical Modling of Flow in a Turbine Stage

The paper is concerned with numerical simulation of flow past the third high pressure stage of a 250 MW steam turbine. The flow field was solved using commercial code Fluent. Vortex structures were identified in the calcualted flow field and reactions, efficiency and loss coefficient of the whole stage were evaluated.

A brief survey of four basic vortex identification methods, namely the Q- criterion, the l2 method, the G2 method and the Complex eigenvalue method, is given in this contribution. All the methods are investigated on an artificial flow- field as well as an unsteady signal, obtained by the TR PIV system. The results of all the methods are evaluated and compared.
