Rise of the FPÖ in the first half of the 90s of 20. century

Hátleová Abstract Bachelor thesis focuses on the rise of the Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs in Austria from the middle of 90s of twentieth century until the National council election in 1994, when the party gained more than 22 percent of the votes. First, the thesis explains partial and political system of the Austria on the basis of the secondary literature. Further, it deals with the concept of Proporz and development of the Freedom party after the Second World War. In the next capture, immigration to Austria and its historical background is covered. Immigration is analyzed as a tool of populist politician Jörg Haider, leader of the Freedom Party. Third part of the thesis identifies Volksbegehren, an unique tool of direct democracy. The study of the Volksbegehren "Austria First" initiated by the Freedom Party connects the topic of immigration and right-wing politics and it serves as an example of reaction of Austrians on the extreme-right propaganda of the Freedom Party. The last part of the thesis searches for the causes of the Freedom Party's success in National council election in 1994.
