Media education on the second level of basic schools
KUBOUŠKOVÁ, Petra
The topic of my bachelor thesis is The Media education at the second grade of the elementary school. The theoretical part has been taken from the professional literature. It is aimed at the characteristics of the media, describes its function and influence, it defines the term media education together with the closely connected terms media literacy and logic. My thesis is dealing with the second grade of elementary schools. That is why I characterized the life stage of its learners - the older school age. The methodology chosen and the choice of the suitable method to teach the media education is based on the learners characteristics. I also touch the Overall Education Program, the School Education Program and their benefits for the learners´ personality development. To carry out the practical part of my bachelor thesis I used the quality type of the research, the questioning method, the semi-standard discussion technique. The research suite was made by the second grade elementary schools teachers in the region of České Budějovice. With the research I approached altogether 31 schools, out of which 5 schools were willing to participate in the research questioning. My research questioning consisted of 11 questions and its aim was to find out the way the media education is carried out at each school, as well as getting the teachers´ views concerning this kind of education. In the practical part I answered two research questions and the related aims. All the teachers questioned think that learners are very strongly influenced by the media, mainly the Internet and above all the Facebook. Children have problems to separate the reality and fiction and are influenced by the misleading commercials. Not only for these reasons, all the women respondents agree with implementing the media education in schools, they thing it important to make the learners familiar with the drawbacks of commercials, to teach them not to be afraid to express their views and to use the Internet effectively. The first research question has been answered: "What are the teachers´ views at the second grade of the chosen elementary schools concerning the media education" ? The target 1 has been met. As for the second research question: "What is the most widely used form of the media education at the second grade of the chosen elementary schools" ? I found out that this kind of education is mostly carried out as a cross-sectional topic integrated in other subjects. Furthermore, it is also offered as a voluntary subject connected with the drama education. Schools also use the form of the project days. Discussion is the most widely used teaching method of all the women respondents. They think it important to find a suitable method to attract the learners´ attention. Thanks to the EU regional projects the schools questioned got the interactive boards which are in use at all of them. These boards are regarded as a suitable part in education, mainly at the second grade of the elementary school. As for the learners with special educational needs, the schools do not need to alter the media education with regards to them, as there are no such learners at these schools. However they think that for these learners the media education is as important as for the others. The target 2 has been met. The research outcomes clearly show that the teachers feel the importance of the media education. They realize that today´s generation of children lives in the Internet world and that it is essential to learn how to get oriented in such world. They want to teach the learners to live with the media, use them for their benefit, not to get scared by them. An interesting finding is also the fact that the schools see the interactive boards as a very important part of education, not only regarding the media education. This thesis can be used as a source of information about the media education and includes the basic information in this field.
