Competitive Balance of First and Second Football Leagues in Selected European Countries

Title: Competitive balance in first and second football leagues in selected European countries. Objective: The aim of this work is to identify competitive balance in first and second football leagues in selected European countries and compare them with each other. Methods: This thesis calculates static competitive balance using the standard deviation of percentage winnings. Results: The results show that in most football leagues there is a gradual decline in competitive balance, especially in the first leagues. In the group of second leagues, there is smaller amount of competitions with decreasing competitive balance. Second competitions were also on average more balanced compared to the first leagues in all countries included in the research. Last but not least, the results also overly show that the first leagues from less developed countries in football such as the Czech Republic, Poland or Croatia are more balanced compared to the first leagues from richer and more developed countries in football such as England, Germany, Spain or Portugal. This is a Czech Gambrinus liga, Dutch Eredivisie, German Bundesliga, Austrian Bundesliga, Ukrainian Premier liha Hungarian OTP liga, compare to competition and an outline of the development trend. Methods: The standard deviation of percentage wins, correlation coefficient, the presentation of results based on percentages, graphs, trends. Results: All results are presented in the analytical part of the work, verify predetermined hypotheses and are an important source of comparison for each event and outline trends.
