The work briefly summarizes the understanding of death in the today´s society and in the history. It describes how death might be understood and defined by the today´s society. The first chapter deals with death in a historical context, its scope to the present time and how it might be understood by the current western society. The second chapter focuses on the reality of literature as a base for films. The third chapter deals with certain points like who stands behind the films production and how films affect their watchers. The fourth chapter is connected with the work of Karel Kachyňa. The fifth chapter deals with the current understanding of death. A part about children´s understanding of death (aged 2 -13) is there, too. The sixth chapter of the previous chapter in the work contexts the filmographic processing of death by Karel Kachyňa, a well-known director. It includes an analysis of his most significant films: the way Karel Kachyňa pictures and presents death and how it may be understood by us, the watchers.
