Is Czech Society Divided? Sociological Analysis of Social and Political Polarization in Czech Society

Master's thesis entitled: Is Czech Society Divided? The Sociological Analysis of Social and Political Polarization in Czech Society is concerned with the study of polarization on a mass level. Its main goal is to indicate social and political polarization by means of a questionnaire survey and subsequent quantitative analysis to identify any fault lines and determine the essential factors that contribute to polarization. The author first focuses on research into party and political polarization, from which she moves to the social dimension of polarization, i.e. the key topics and groups that form fault lines. In the text, the author further focuses on opinion extremity, affective polarization and perceived polarization, where the influence of (a)political anger or political engagement is examined. Last but not least, the influence of social media use and exposure to extreme views and political content on levels of polarization is examined. The results show that Czech society does not appear to be strongly divided, rather it feels that way. However, the research revealed several lines of conflict in society concerning the political situation, human rights, topical issues, social questions and wealth inequalities. Social environment and polarisation within suburb: case study Jesenice u Prahy

5 ABSTRACT Suburbanization is the process of moving residents from the core city to the outskirts. Newly-migrants from the city often carry different views and lifestyles than the original inhabitants of the village, which may be the cause of social polarisation. The general aim of the thesis is to evaluate the development of the social environment, to describe and explain the consequences of suburbanization on social polarisation in the Prague city region on the example of Jesenice u Prahy. Within the general objective, the thesis sets two partial objectives: Describe the demographic development of the population, the development of housing construction and the age structure in Jesenice. Compare the results of the social climate from Petra Puldová's thesis (2006), describe how the social climate has changed over the past 13 years. The questionnaire survey is used to fulfill both the general and the second partial objective. The questionnaire is used to find out if the respondents have mutual relations with the original and new inhabitants, how satisfied they are with the life in the municipality, social cohesion, how they participate in social and political life. Lucie Sedláčková Dissertation Globalization in the Contemporary Dutch Novel Abstract in English This dissertation deals with representations of different aspects of globalization in the contemporary Dutch novel. The main questions are: 1. Which representations of the aspects of globalization can be found in the contemporary Dutch novels analyzed in this dissertation? 2. Are there relations between the knowledge of this phenomenon in specialist literature and in the fiction analyzed in this dissertation? 3. Which points of view do literary texts take with respect to globalization? The research method is based on the theory of cultural representation, but the traditional instruments of literary theory are also employed. The goal of the dissertation is to survey discourse about globalization in the analyzed fiction; the terminology is derived from the specialist, especially sociological, literature on this phenomenon from 1990 on. Globalization is considered a complex process which was accelerated mainly after 1989 by communication technology, the development of the world economy and politics (especially the fall of the Iron Curtain).
