Concept of Sensory activation - a modern approach in care of senior people suffering from dementia

The thesis deals with the concept of sensory activation from Lore Wehner as the new approach in care of senior people suffering various levels of dementia. In the beginning there are described cognitive, physical and emotional changes that are typical for the eldery people. Further the changes in the social status of elderl people, their values and issues with adaptation to new situation in old age. Second part describes the residential senior homes and social care standards. In the next part are described concepts used in activation of seniors, the main focus is given to the Concept of sensory activation by Lore Wehner, its princples and objectives. The bachelor thesis evaluates the the importance of the said concept in the current senior care and its contribution to improvement of quality of life of senior people affected by various degree of dementia.

This bachelor´s work is theoretical and the aim is to describe new models and their relations to the clients and employees at the seniors´rest homes on the base of special literature and of experience from the professional schooling. The work contains the discussion comparing these models. By way of introduction I define the expressions of old age, aging process and their displays. Then I focus on description of seniors´ rest homes, on the related standards and on the employees of the helping professions. The last chapter is devoted to new conceptions of seniors´ care, which are e.g. Validations by Naomi Feil, Psychographical model by professor Böhm and Sensory activation by Lohre Wehner. This work means the help to understand these models and to show how to ease and improve the quality if clients´ lives. It could be very helpful for those who take care of the senior clients and who try to understand them.
