This bachelor thesis deals primarily with oil accidents and the environmental policy associated with them. The aim of the thesis is to analyze oil accidents in terms of causes, consequences and environmental policies. The focus is on policies that try to minimize oil pollution. The partial aim is to analyze and compare these aspects on two specific accidents in the USA: Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon. The first part of the thesis focuses on a general description of the oil industry, to put the issue into context. Next, the thesis comprehensively analyzes oil accidents and established global environmental policies that combat oil pollution. In the second part, the specific aspects are compared within the two mentioned accidents. In these specific examples, the impact of environmental policies is also assessed, according to the evolution of the amount of oil pollution over individual years. In the last part of the paper, the established facts are evaluated, when environmental policies prove to be crucial for combating oil accidents.

The basic aim of the thesis is descritpion of oil accidents, which are these days the normal part of our lives. I deal with the issue of oil extraction as a base material for petrol, oil and other oil-based products. The current methods of production make these accidents impossible to avoid. The biggest problems come from using large tankers to transport the oil, other problems bring oil processing and waste production. This thesis focuses on the assessment of oil accidents and their effects on water quality, as well as on the whole ecosystem. Keywords Oil, oil accident, water pollution
