Tomas O'Crohan's The Islandman as the Object of Satire in Flann O'Brien's The Poor Mouth.

After an overview of the literature written in the Irish language, this thesis analyzes the English translation of the memoir An t-Oileánach (The Islandman) by Tomas O'Crohan with the interest in the pattern set by the author in describing the rural Irish life. Then the English translation of the comic novel An Béal Bocht (The Poor Mouth) by Flann O'Brien is investigated for intertextual references to O'Crohan's memoir as well as the elements of satire in the novel. The work of the author of the illustrations from The Poor Mouth, Ralph Steadman, is briefly described. The last chapter gives an overview of how fictional depiction of the Irish country people evolved during the 20th century.

The bachelor thesis submitted deals with the creation, history and development of the agricultural high school in Pisek at the turn of the 20th century. The agricultural high school is one of the most prominent schools in the town of Pisek and its longstanding successful operations place it among the best high schools in Pisek. The thesis is based upon study of specialized literature, publications, printed yearly reports and yearbooks. The thesis is structured into 5 basic chapters. Since the agricultural high school is closely linked to agriculture practices, the second chapter outlines the history of agriculture at the turn of the 20th century and focuses more specifically on the period starting from the revolutionary year of 1848. The following chapter describes in general terms the history of agricultural education and the creation of agricultural and farming schools in the Czech lands within the context of agriculture history. It subsequently explains the gradual upswing of this type of school and the reasons for their creation in terms of educational needs of landowners and their national awareness. The fourth chapter deals with the history of the town of Pisek where the agricultural high school was created and run its operations with a particular focus on events that took place in the period starting from its foundation onwards. The last closing chapter is devoted to the history of the school from its foundation until the year 1949 with a small digression to the year 1970. It deals with the reasons and circumstances underlying its foundation, analyzes its upswing and expansion, touches on a few significant events in its history, contains a statistics of its student body and teachers and finally provides a list of specialized training courses on offer. An entire chapter is devoted to one of the most prominent figures in the school history, its longtime headmaster, Ladislav Burket.
Civil elite, local autorities and culture of the town of Telč
SOCHOROVÁ, Šárka
This dissertation is dealing with the town of Telč and its way of living in the first half of the 20th century. The research is focused on the thorough analysis of local authorities from the social and occupational point of view, territorial origin and location of residence its various fellows. The main purpose of this is to idicate the changes which coincided with the influence of nationwide political, social and economic changes. The illustration of six Telč´s families with various professions charts their share which affected the social, cultural and public life of the town. The aim is to get an integral view of this period, therefore the grammar school staff have been included, because of their participatory role in local authorities and social life as well. Municipal and school celebrations have been included to illustrate the cultural backround of provincial town in the first half of the 20th century.
