Senior citizens in residential institutions in Austria: Own perception of needs

The thesis deals with subjective perception of needs of clients in residential institutions in Austria. The overview part describes important concepts of old age and the issues and the process of aging, further it describes ways of adaptation to old age, forms of activisation of seniors and the topic of human needs of elderly people. Theoretical basis of the work is typology of needs by A. Maslow and M. Max-Neef. The overview part is followed by qualitative research that is looking to find an aswer to the research question: What is the subjective perception of needs by elderly people living in residential care.

The bachelor's thesis describes the approach to seniors in senior residences in the Czech Republic and in the federal state of Salzburg in Austria. The thesis is divided into theiretical and practical part. The theoretical part describes the concepts of old age, aging process, changes in the process of aging and covers also the adaptation process to aging. The further part describes the concepts of activisation and activisation programs as important element influencing the quality of life in senior residential homes. Further it describes the set of activities of seniors, the offer of activation programs. The practical part is focused on description of two concrete senior residential homes. The research used the method of multiple case studies. The objective was to determine whether the seniors are satisfied with the caretaking personell approach and how they perceive the offer of activation programs. The thesis shows the approach to care of senior people in both countries.
