Service Design in Public Libraries

This thesis deals with service design in public libraries. The theses consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part describes the services in public libraries. Then basics and principles of design services are introduced. This is followed by an overview of service design tools and methods suitable for use in libraries. The practical part analyzes services of the Matěj Josef Sychra Library from a user perspective, using tools and methods of service design and some possible improvements of these services are suggested.

This bachelor thesis is focused on patron segmentation in public libraries in the context of marketing communication between the library and users. Thesis overviews the marketing theory of segmentation, which then transfers into an environment of public libraries and describes several important segments. The practical part consists of a case study on the example of Nymburk City library , which describes the selected target groups of this library and how to work with them. Education towards integration - the case of public libraries

Recognizing the actuality of diverse society we live in, my thesis aims to describe the relation between integration of migrants and education. Firstly I am trying to describe the learning from everyday life that occurs in new social context for a newcoming migrant. Based on this notion I evaluate the possibility of intentional education that could ease and support adaptation process. I try to identify core needs and themes that educational activities should comprehend to fulfil the desired form of education. Later I am questioning to which extent is possible to influence an integration process by educational action. Second part of the thesis is dedicated to a European project called Libraries for All which was aimed to promote upgrade of multicultural services in local public libraries. My aim is to present the current trend in librarianship and migrant work within culturally diverse societies.
Public Library Services for Visually Impaired: An Analysis

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of public library services for visually impaired users. Firstly, the thesis provides a theoretical introduction to the topic. It describes several projects related to the topic, activities of chosen non-profit organizations and fundamental legislation. Secondly, the thesis focuses on provision of library services for visually impaired in public libraries in the Czech Republic and abroad. The practical part of the thesis consists of an analysis of four Czech public libraries and of a qualitative research. Finally, the findings are summarized into several recommendations which could help libraries successfully offer services for visually impaired users.
Political and educational role of public libraries in the 50 and 60 years in Ostrava region

Political and educational role of public libraries in the 50 and 60 years in Ostrava region The thesis is focused on cultural politics of the communist regime in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century in relation to public libraries. Based on archival materials the main attention is paid to the situation in the Ostrava region Cultural policy was aimed in two directions. First through repression, when citizens were banned from access to ideas and works that the regime considered as harmful or objectionable. This activity was implemented by censorship of printed materials, sorting of collections and persecution of opponents. Second way to filling the gaps after undesirable denied authors by pro-regime publications, written in the style of socialist realism. Public libraries were using different sorts of methods how to bring readers to this new literature and how to bring them up to be loyal and conscious builders of socialism - e.g. discussions and reader's conferences, literature contests and polls, Fucik's badge, Month of books and so on. The focus is also on libraries promotion of actions and activities supporting the policy of the Party and the government, such as celebrations of party anniversary, recruitment in mining, atheistic education of readers etc.
The support of the childrens' reading in the Czech Republic and German speaking countries

The diploma thesis concentrates on the children's reading issues, and compares the approach to its support in the Czech Republic and the German speaking countries. The introductory part is devoted to the current children's reading, the factors that influence it, and reading interests of today's children. It also evaluates the contemporary Czech children's literature and its publishers. The following two chapters describe the activities for the children's reading support that are developed by Czech libraries and non-librarian entities. The next part introduces the projects for the children's reading support implemented in Austria and Germany; it also shortly describes the programs of other German speaking countries. The sixth chapter briefly outlines the subject matter of the children's reading support in both Czech and foreign media. There are two surveys attached to the thesis. The first compares the activities of selected Czech and foreign libraries, and their contribution to the children's reading support. The second survey, implemented among the children readers of the Central Library of the Municipal Library in Prague, evaluates the children's satisfaction with the offered thematic discussions for the school classes. Environments and projects that support children's reading

The thesis deals with a support of children's reading. The work is aimed to factors and actors influencing reading education. The first part solves theoretical definition and the meaning of reading. Primarily there are explained two important terms related to the topic - reading and a reader. Further it is proceeding by attention given to different phases of reading education before and during school attendance. Primarily three environments influencing reading literacy were observed. These include family, school and public library. Furthermore, national representative projects supporting reading primarily in libraries are shortly presented at this thesis as well. The second part is focused on the Municipal Library of Prague, specifically Smichov branch and its activities. In this part are charted various programmes for children. Repeated activities for parents with children or for children alone are observed. Also, events for groups of preschool and school children are described. The important part of presented work deals with survey of cooperation between Smichov branch and local schools. The research results are to determine practical experience of teachers from these schools in activities of Smichov branch and in their cooperation with this library.
Newspapers in public libraries

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to find out how the activities concerning daily press go in five selected public libraries. In opening chapter the examined branch is delineated by definitions of used terms, previous adaptations of this topic are summarized, and methodology of research based on interview and surveys is introduced. Hypotheses are expressed in the last part of this chapter. In the second chapter all the Czech national daily press is characterized and their internet activities are documented. If those titles have an electronic version, it's functionality is examined in this part of thesis. Chapters 3 and 4 present results of research which was done at five libraries of various sizes.The third chapter presents selected libraries and it describes the workflow of purchasing the press in those organizations with a special emphasis on the process of choosing the material. In the fourth chapter the preferences of readers in selected libraries and the intensity of their interest over time are examined. This part of dissertation also includes analysis of other activities concerning press such as cataloguing and displacing journals. Third and Fourth chapter are closed with summarization of detected facts. In the conclusion assigned hypotheses are confirmed or disconfirmed.
Public relations in Czech libraries: analysis of external communication strategy

This thesis is devoted to the topic of the public relations in Czech public libraries. The theoretical part provides a comprehensive summary of public relations as one of the main forms of external marketing and managerial communications of libraries. There are gradually described meaning, goals, principles, resources, contents, methods and instruments used by public relations. Considerable space is devoted to the process of branding, building a good image of a library and external mass media and internet presentation. The text is accompanied by many examples of a good practice from Czech libraries. In the empirical part there is presented the project of the exploratory survey about the implementation of public relations into Czech libraries in 2015. This survey helped map out the current situation and brought a lot of interesting information about attitudes towards public relations and forms used by external presentation, promotion and communication of Czech libraries. Detailed insight into the practice provides a brief overview study which describes the external communications strategy and some public relations activities in two selected public libraries in Hradec Králové.
Internet, public libraries and information policy in Cuba

The aim of this thesis is to present the development and current state of information policy and public libraries in Cuba. The first part of thesis outlines historical and political development in Cuba since the beginning of the revolution in 1959 to the present and introduces the development of selected areas of information policy on the island. The second part analyzes the expansion of information and communication technologies, including Internet and its censorship. The last part of thesis summarizes historical development and current state of public libraries and partially librarianship.
