Propaganda of the British Union of Fascists

Jakub Drábik Ústav světových dějin Abstract The dissertation deals with the propaganda of the largest and only relevant British fascist party, the British Union of Fascists, founded in 1932 by Sir Oswald Mosley. The aim of the dissertation is to look at the BUF propaganda in the light of the "new consensus" that has emerged in fascist studies in recent years. Based on the official BUF party press, publications, pamphlets, propaganda posters, speeches and public appearances of the movement's leading figures and other forms of propaganda, this work analyses the propaganda of the BUF not just in the terms of crude "brainwashing" or "social control," but also as a form of social engineering - in other words, as a serious attempt to realize the ideas of an alternative modernity and of a political, economic, social and cultural revolution. In spite of widely held view that the BUF was only a group of crude anti-Semites, thugs, bullies or even opportunists with materialistic goals, this work argues that the "propagation of faith" or "the dissemination of political beliefs" was one of the motives of BUF propagandists.
Comparison of the Methods of Commercial and Political Marketing in the American Media in the 1970's and 1980's.

UNIVERZITA KARLOVA V PRAZE FAKULTA SOCIÁLNÍCH VĚD Institut mezinárodních studií Jan Kleňha Porovnání metod komerčního a politického marketingu v amerických médiích v 70. a 80. letech 20. století Bakalářská práce Praha 2014 Abstract: Two decades of 1970's and 1980's are perceived from a media point of view as an era of large and previously inexperienced systemic changes within the industry, with far-reaching impacts on the American society. This bachelor's thesis will focus on proving that, since it's extensive emergence in 1970's, the political marketing has been implementing many of the methods of commercial marketing, which were previously developed by rigorous empirical studies and were proven to be successful. Political campaigns were using the same media as the commercial campaigns and were forced to deal with the same cultural background and the same changes in the society. No matter what the crucial differences in financing, preconditions, aims or impacts between political and commercial advertising were, many of their methods were based on the same socio-psychological principles of influence and persuasion. Therefore, the more these methods were used in specific political campaigns, the more successful these campaigns were in reaching its objective.
Evident and Hidden Manipulation in Political Speeches of Socialistic Era

This thesis is concerned with identifying and describing the linguistic elements of manipulative strategies of selected political speeches from 1948 till 1957. In the first part the work is focused on the principles of political communication, further persuasion and manipulation with respect to the relationship of these terms. In the next sections we find formal and functional description language means with regard to their pragmatic semantic components, mechanisms of propaganda and political line of reasoning. Knowledge of various aspects of language allows description of specific manipulative tendencies in political speeches and their burden in terms of evident and hidden action to the addressee.
A content analysis of photographs in magazine Pestrý týden and Life magazine

The thesis "A content analysis of photographs in Pestry tyden and LIFE magazine" analyses two successful magazines of the first half of the 20th century. Intentionally, two periodicals of different origin (Czechoslovakia and the United States) are compared to investigate the assumption that the different origin has major influence on the overall concept and focus of the periodicals. The subject of this study is the selection of volumes of 1937-1945, the period of the greatest success of both magazines. The study aims not only at describing the contents of the periodicals but also at situating them into social, political and art-historical context. The study is based on a theoretical part which gives a general overview of photojournalism and tracks the slow beginning of journalistic photography and the birth of the first illustrated magazines. This part also deals with technological development which made possible quality image journalism. The study does not leave out numerous restrictions, e. g. censorship, which were a frequent point of struggle for the magazines' authors. The Media Image of the Hockey Summit Series in 1972 and 1974 in Czechoslovakian Press

My bachelor thesis deals with a media potrayal of so-called Summit Series from the years 1972 and 1974 in the Czechoslovakian press. Since both events, where both Soviet and overseas athletes performed, took place in the 1970s during the Cold War, they had both sports and political dimension. During this time, Czechoslovakia was a solid part of the East in a bipolar division of the world. My thesis concentrates on the role of a communist propaganda in the Summit Series coverage. Method of the thesis is quantitative content analysis. My research has a theoretical part which examines socio- cultural and medial context of that time.
Protectorate magazines and attachments of daily press for children and youth as a tool of Nazi propaganda

The work attempts to analyze manifestations and the possible impact of Nazi propaganda in two stages of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. As to daily press the children's annex of Národní politika (National Politics -the most widely read periodical) and Lidové noviny (People's Press - a prestigious and independent newspaper close to the Castle during 1st Republic) have been analyzed. As to periodicals published during the first phase of the protectorate (until the arrest of Prime Minister Alois Eliáš in September 1941) the magazine Mladý hlasatel (Young Announcer) and Dětská neděle (Children's Sunday Magazine) which began to be published in 1935 were chosen and analyzed. The second phase of the protectorate was tightly associated with the establishment and existence of the Curatorium for Education of Bohemian and Moravian Youth and therefore its periodicals Zteč (Charge), Správný kluk (Good Boy) and Dívčí svět (Girl's world) were analyzed together with Knihovna pro mládež (Youth Library) issued by the Curatorium later.
