The aim of this thesis is to analyze the food security problems in West Africa together with further analysis of Mali and Senegal. Furthemore, this thesis provides an insight into geographic positions, agricultural development and overall hunger situations of chosen areas as these all named aspects have both direct and indirect impacts on food security. To measure the food security in chosen regions two different indexes were used in order to ensure maximal accuracy of the analyzed criteria (the Global Hunger Index and the Global Food Security Index). Moreover, the thesis analyzes main geographic and demographic challenges in the region and their correlations wtih food security issues. Next, different regional organizations and policies focused on the development of the areas are described. Based on the theoretical and analytical research and results of the thesis, recommendations for sustainable development and improvement of food security are eventually provided.

Food security and staple crops
Čermáková, Lenka ; Milerová Prášková, Dagmar (advisor) ; Jančák, Vít (referee)
Nowadays, with growing population especially in developing countries, hunger and poverty are a huge problem. To reduce or eliminate hunger and poverty, the concept of food security was introduced. This concept describes an ideal situation to be reached. The first part of my work introduces this concept and introduces four basic pillars of food security. Food security is closely related crops, so the second part of my work focuses on selected staple crops that play a role in realizing the food security concept. These crops are rice, corn, potatoes and wheat. The concept will be fulfilled when all four pillars are met simultaneously. There are many obstacles in the way, from economic to climate ones. Changes need to be adapted whether through change in agriculture (more mechanization and electrification) or by improving the conditions of the farmers themselves. Improving the infrastructure will allow the consumer base to be broadened and thus revenue increased. The result is that everything depends on the crops themselves which have the potential to eliminate hunger. In the beginning, it is important to select a seed, to grow a crop that can provide income and that will not grow at the expense of farmers' livelihoods. Avoiding food degradation in poor storage or production can save many crops. With...
Land grabbing in developing countries
Hučík, Jakub ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Vrtiška, Tomáš Josef (referee)
The objective of this study is to give a summary of today's knowledge and information about land grabbing thus about large land acuisitions for agricultural purposes, especially in the developing countries. These investments are led by various reasons, the main reason being economical profit. The most obvious and the most visible impacts fall mainly on poor local residents but also on country's economical development or environment. Besides causes and effects I looked at the total extent of land grabbing as shown by different statistics. In the last chapter I depicted land grabbing on an example of a particular country, namely Mozambique. Especially a possible extent of those land acqusitions and specific effects on population of this country.
Problem of the undernourishment and the food water resources
Polzová, Tereza ; Kuna, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Petr, Petr (referee)
The main focus of the final thesis are the problems related to the problem of undernourishment in affected regions of the world, sea fishing and aquaculture. In the beginning, the definition of the food problem in the world is introduced. The potential contribution of proteins from the sea production to human dietary is emphasized. Further, the exponential population growth is mentioned, influencing the future development and the food problem itself. The second part of thesis is dedicated to fisheries and aquaculture. The importance and benefits of sea water resources as well as aquaculture is mentioned from the nutritional and livelihood point of view. Sea management and international regulations are playing crucial role in the sustainability of the fisheries stocks. These are needed to eliminate the problems of fisheries and aquaculture and the degradation of sea ecosystems due to unsuitable fishing techniques. At the end of the thesis a summary of all important information is listed. Followed by possible solutions of these global problems.
Food availability in developing countries - new challenge for local producers or new export space for the EU exporters?
Vlach, Jiří ; Kabát, Ladislav (advisor) ; Klára, Klára (referee)
Food security is influenced by many factors, which are divided into four categories according to FAO. Food Availability is one of these categories. It is closely connected with domestic food production as well as with international trade with food and with free movement of commodities on the international market. Countries in south Africa joined together and established South African Development Community (SADC) in 1992, which significantly changed their trade policies and their economics opened to international trade. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate, how these new conditions in international politics and trade affected the situation of food security and food availability in SADC countries. The research was based on common statistical analysis of secondary data developed by transnational organizations engaged in food security and international trade (FAOSTAT, WTO, World Bank). Results showed that the index of imported food to domestic food production has been growing in the last 10 years and it reached 51% in 2011. The food exports value and domestic production value are increasing as well and the average food import tariffs are decreasing. Also I proved some dependency of food imports to average dietary energy adequacy as well as dependency of domestic food production to average dietary energy adequacy. However with the use of comparative advantage method (RSCA) it was shown that SADC countries lost their comparative advantage in trade with food. The correlation of index of selected food security indicators to regional political stability was not proved.
The Horn of Africa food crisis
Viazanková, Zuzana ; Kuna, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Petr, Petr (referee)
This work focuses on the Horn of Africa food crisis. The food problem is one of the largest and oldest problems of mankind. This problem is closely related to the problem of hunger and poverty. Lack of access to food, raw materials and water is reflected in higher tension and violence, which then results in various conflicts. The work provides a theoretical basis for this problem. The following section describes the causes of the food problem, such as population growth, lack of education, land degradation, climate change, natural disasters and the like. The practical part is focused on the analysis of statistical data on demographics, economics, poverty, foreign aid, foreign trade and agriculture of the Horn of Africa. In the last part of the thesis, there are outlined possible solutions of undesirable situation in which the Somali peninsula is located, among them an increase in the population's education, stabilization of population, the development of agriculture, change of ownership of the soil, economic growth, integration groupings and food programs.
