Application of Art Therapy for Children in Special Education

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to explore art therapy in a heterogeneous group of pupils of a special education primary school and to offer methodology of work with young school-age children with distinct development needs. The study presents evaluation of the most effective methods and forms of work with this group, as well as assessment of benefits and limitations of art therapy with a special regard to group dynamics. Effectivity of the art therapeutic method is evaluated through observation of artistic development of individual students. The results were verified by the means of interview with the school psychologist and respective parents. The result of the study shows the benefits of group art therapy, which comprise of providing deeper understanding of individual group members and their social skills development, including giving help and empathy training. The limitations of the method reside in art work assessment capabilities of pupils caused by varying development needs that hinder an in-depth discussion of individual topics.
