Mortal Prague. Funeral culture of the early-modern period using Prague as an example.

Considering the extensiveness of thematter, the scope has been limited to the area of Prague, to the cultural sphere of secular nobility and to the time period between the years 1500 and 1700. Naturally, the timeframe is not and cannot be absolute given the nature of this subject matter, which is culture. In the introductory chapter, the paper seeks to clarify eschatology and religious conditions in the early modern period, depicting death and its grip in the 16th and 17th centuries. Each chapter is devoted to a specific phenomenon of the funeral culture, in the same order in which the succession should logically follow shortly before and after the death of an important person. As such, the thesis specifically discusses the doctrine of "good death" - so called ars moriendi, exhibitions of the body, the funeral procession, construction of the Castrum Doloris, funeral sermons, and provision of funeral monuments. This diploma thesis deals with the issue of the written inheritance of the priest Martin Vích. It analyses and focuses on his written preparation for the preaching during liturgical year. The goal of this thesis is to bring a view about his preaching activity, and to get his characteristics, interesting images and ideas. The main section of this thesis is a practical part focused on an analysis of the preserved preaching in Christmas time, Easter time and in liturgical interim. The preserved preparation for the sacramental and funeral preaching is attached in conclusion. The thesis is also focused on a comparison with other preachers.

The thesis discusses the structure of thought of the early modern period world view focusing on the female ideal scheme in urban environment. The funeral sermon file within this time period became the source of the thesis. The theoretical part offers a literature overview and then a general introduction to the funeral sermons, taking into account the nature of the literature formation. The practical part deals with the analysis of female perpective themes in the field of funeral sermons. This section is divided into several subchapters. Primarily there is a space devoted to basic elements which used to form a part of female existance. These elements in their final consistency refer to the nature of women´s predicament in the early modern world. Furthermore the thesis devotes space to basic ideas of funeral sermons which fundamentally were involved in the construction of the text and simultaneously shape its entire character. The conclusion was left to the edition of funeral sermons themselves.
