Issues of communication between nurses and parents during the reception of a child at a children clinic

Every day, nurses at the children´s clinic meet parents of ill children, who are just being checking in to a hospital. The communication with parents requires good communication skills. The thesis focuses on issues of communication between a nurse working at the children´s clinic reception and a parent of the child being checked in to a hospital. It also points at the most common communication problems that can appear during child´s check in. Thesis is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part I deal with communication issues, its evolution, communication barriers and the most common communication mistakes. Then I describe the most common diseases and states contributing to hospitalization of a child and the environment of hospital´s reception. Another point in the theoretical part is the analysis of problems with conversation with parents and particularity of the conversation with a child. was focused on finding out the level of communication process between nurse and parent and on describing the most common mistakes in communication. Another objective of thesis was also to find out the efficiency of information transfer from the nurse to the parent and how the age or seriousness of illness affects the communication. There has been seven research questions determined, based on the thesis objectives. There are two methods of qualitative research used to obtain and evaluate data ? semistructured dialog and observation. Observation was focused on communication between nurses and parents in the hospitals in Tábor, Český Krumlov and Jindřichův Hradec. Observation was followed by dialogs with parents, these dialogs concerned questions about communication of nurses. The thesis points out phenomena occurring in communication between nurses and parents based on the results of the research. It points out the most common nurse´s communication problems. It also recommends appropriate communication techniques for nurses to be used during the child´s check in to a hospital. These techniques should improve the transfer of information from nurse to parents and increase its efficiency.
