Visual self-presentation of users on Tinder
Krkoška, David ; Hrůzová, Andrea (advisor) ; Lábová, Sandra (referee)
The thesis examines the visual self-presentation of users of the dating app Tinder and evaluates how this presentation varies by gender and culture. In the theoretical part, it examines the phenomenon of online dating and its social significance. It also puts it in the context of social changes and the transformation of intimate relationships. The second chapter elaborates on theories of impression management and their application to the online environment. It also describes the role gender plays in visual presentation and puts this topic in the context of male gaze theory and self-objectification theory. Finally, it discusses theoretical concepts related to the analysis of visual presentation. The practical part of the thesis then uses quantitative content analysis to answer the set questions. In the data interpretation section, users are also categorized based on dominant themes and visual strategy. The research revealed differences in the presentation of the analyzed groups and the inclination of men and women to present themselves through traditional gender roles. However, a type of female users whose presentation did not conform to this stereotypical portrayal was also revealed during the research.
Satisfaction and stability in a marriage: does it matter if you have met online or offline?
Kačena, Petr ; Hrabec, Ondřej (advisor) ; Lukavská, Kateřina (referee)
The master thesis looks at marital satisfaction and stability in Czech marriages between 2005 and 2015. The aim of the thesis was to find out whether meeting your spouse online or offline affects marital satisfaction and break-up rate (separation and divorce). The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on attractiveness, the characteristics of a good relationship, the development of marital satisfaction and existing research on online dating. A nationally representative sample of 316 respondents provided answers in an online questionnaire. The results indicate that one in three Czech marriages now begin online. Half of the online group met on an online dating site and 17 % on a social media site. When compared to those that began offline, "online marriages" were slightly less likely to end up in a marital break-up (31 % offline, 26,5 % online) and reported slightly higher marital satisfaction. However, none of these differences were statistically significant. The differences were higher when the online group was narrowed down to the ones who met on an online dating site and on a social media site but remained statistically insignificant. This group also retrospectively reported better fulfilment of their criteria for their life companion at the beginning of a relationship (p=0,041). In general, men...
Online dating applications from the perspective of uses and gratifications theory
Šulcová, Karolína ; Jirků, Jan (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
Dating online applications have fundamentally changed the form of online dating. They are available on a mobile phone and are based on spatial proximity of users and ease of use. This diploma thesis focuses on users of these applications. This thesis is based on the assumptions of the uses and gratifications theory, which assumes that the media audience is active and uses the media to satisfy its needs. The aim of this thesis is to find out how individuals use the dating applications and what their reasons for using are. To collect data, I chose a combination of quantitative and qualitative approach. First, an on-line questionnaire survey was conducted, followed by semi- structured interviews with applications users. Research has shown that the reason for using and the attitude of users varies with each individual and can change during use. Keywords dating applications, Tinder, online dating, uses and gratifications theory, active audience, mixed methods research

Lučan, Ondřej ; Pospíšilová, Marie (advisor) ; Čada, Karel (referee)
Depending on technological progress and the nature of the actual period characterised by speed, individualism and the fragility of connections, there is an expansion of establishing relations by means of Internet social sites, especially among young people. Meeting people is not concentrated on specialized serves (Tinder, Badoo) but considering the diversity of functions and the amount of users, some people contact others using common websites like Facebook or Instagram. In virtual space, there is a risk of differences between online and offline self-presentation. Individuals tend to accentuate their strong points, and hide their weak points. Regarding the heterogenity of society, the space is occupied by people who expect diverse gratifications, which are reflected in their way of communication. The research is conducted by virtue of half structured interviews with the users of social websites between 20 and 30 years old. Those people profit from the opportunity of easy selection of a partner in a wide spectrum of various profiles without the condition of geographical proximity. As the weakest point of online dating they consider the occurrence of individuals with a deceptive virtual presentation of their identity. The illusion and subsequent disclosure of physical and moral differences can cause...
