Narrating an event: Representation of East German revolution 1989 in novel "Helden wie wir" and the historical monography "Die revolution von 1989 in der DDR"

This work deals with the techniques of historical and counterfactual representation of East German revolution 1989 in the novel Helden wie wir and the historical monograph Endspiel: Die Revolution von 1989 in der DDR. The work describes the functions of the techniques by a narratological and hermeneutical approach. The analysis is focused on the transformations of historical and subjective time in the specific time of narratives.
Metamorphoses of Narrator in Novels of Jaromír John

Metamorphoses of Narrator in Novels of Jaromír John This diploma paper focuses on the function of the narrator and his various forms in John's prosaic work. It deals with the issue of the construction of the fictional world and how the narrator influences the reader's understanding of the described events. Primarily, we try to compare the narrative categories of the main contemporary concepts as influenced by Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Franz Stanzel and Lubomír Doležel. It is our terminology base. Theoretical understanding of the narrator is the basis for the analysis of John's fiction from the aspect of narrative types applied to a selected sample of author's works: the anthology of the tales with war theme Večery na slamníku, novels Moudrý Engelbert, Výbušný zlotvor, Pampovánek, Honda Cibulků; marginally Estét and other works. Concurrently this work aims to describe construction methods that are typical for John's creative style - it is mainly the use of irony, the principle of collage and documentary elements. It shows that the author's work at that time belonged to the experimental stream of Czech prose. Also, we observe the relationship between author's prose work and his aesthetic concept. Narrative strategies in the short stories of Raymond Carver

The thesis Vypravěčské strategie v povídkách Raymonda Carvera deals with the literary concept of a narrator. It's results - typologically different narrators and their characterizations - are based on reading and analysis of all published Carver's short stories. The thesis is divided into two main parts - into the theoretical part in which we briefly introduce the development and fundamental concepts of narrator in the literary theory (e.g. in concepts of F. K. Stanzel, K. Friedmann, G. Genette, T. Todorov, D. Cohn, S. Chatman, J. Culler, J. H. Miller and W. C. Booth) and into the practical part which analyses and characterizes those narrative strategies and types with the use of previously introduced terms and theories. The result of this thesis is a lucid list of different narrative types in Carver's short stories.
Representations of "great" (canonically authoritative) texts in contemporary popular culture

The thesis focuses on how literary texts of the so called "great tradition" can become parts of contemporary pop culture based on intertextual connections (a wide variety of them from explicit quotation to loose inspiration by the original) with the historical canonical texts, and especially on the changes occurring during such actualization in the narrative categories (storyline, space, time, characters, narrator). The theoretical part defines the concept of adaptation and related terms of intertextuality and intermediality and specifies relevant narrative categories. The analytic part focuses on two literary "giants", William Shakespeare to represent male literary oeuvre and Jane Austen as a representative of female writers' tradition, to show particular narrative modifications by comparing the original versions with their modernized adaptations that function as their pop cultural counterparts.
On Description

There are probably not many readers who would cherish their memories of writing a description at school… Nevertheless, hardly anyone would deny that we cannot do without descriptions in everyday face-to-face dialogues – though only a few of us may be able to reflect on the process of describing, and to judge to what extent it is influenced by the circumstances surrounding communication. The essay on “absent description” by Jana Hoffmannová provides an insight into everyday speech, as well as an opportunity for linguistic self-reflection. Linguistics is only one of the disciplines present in this volume: nine representatives of various fields of research and theories are brought together here to discuss the issue of description: analytic philosophy and fictionality theory, linguistics and literary history, art history and intermedia theory. Petr Koťátko discusses the relationship between the communicational functions of descriptions and their function in the structure of fictional worlds of literature. While he employs realist descriptions to illustrate the limits of their identificatory work, various descriptive modes provide a parameter for Ivana Taranenková to pursue the development of realist writing. Hardly any reader will doubt the fact that every fiction has its own more or less overt (or covert) narrator. Nevertheless, it remains to be proved whether there is a corresponding “descriptor” in descriptions: an attempt at doing so in the context of Czech fiction is made by Stanislava Fedrová. The possibilities of employing descriptive forms as a tool of poetics (be it the historical or the intermedia one) are put to the test by Zdeněk Hrbata (in his interpretation of the generic schemes underlying Gautier’s novel Le Capitaine Fracasse, and Emma Tornborg, who focuses on poetic ekphrasis.

Film interperations of significant works in Czech literature
ŠAUFLEROVÁ, Petra
The aim of this diploma thesis is to discuss film interpretations of major works in Czech literature. At first I discussed with the question of literary work rewritten into a movie, I introduced the basic terminology and analyzed in detail the various elements of literary text. I also mentioned the specifics of literary and cinematic expression, individual adaptation approaches and I briefly stopped by the theory of hot and cold media. The next part of my work is devoted to narrative technologies and the figure of the narrator. There I introduced different opinions of literary theorists on this question. For the practical part of my diploma thesis I chose the representatives of each adaptation approach and then I analyzed them in terms of the credibility of literary text and the figure of the narrator.
Time and Space in Fantasy

This work focuses on the representation of the narrative categories of time and space in the fantasy literature's pieces. It delineates the sub-genres of fantasy and describes the particularities of the genre. The prominent pieces of the fantasy genre are used to demonstrate the established knowledge. There is a conclusion of the differences between the representation of the space-time facts in the fantasy genre and the other genres in the final part of the work.
Fiction Work of Hana Bělohradská Published in the 1960s

In my bachelor thesis I will deal with works of Hana Bělohradská which were published in the sixties of the twentieth century. In this her early works - Bez krásy, bez límce, Vítr se stočí k jihovýchodu and Poslední večeře I will mainly focus on reflection of displayed reality. I will try this reflection through narratological category of a narrator. I will define this narratological category in theory and then I will try to apply this theoretical knowledge on a narrator in the works of Hana Bělohradská. The important elements of my work will also be chapter which will focus on the personality, life and the benefits of the writer Hana Bělohradská. I will deal especially with the formation of her early poetics and also with the question of blame and offense in her work.
Narrative Method in Olga Barényi´s Novel Janka

This bachelor thesis deals with narrative strategy in the first Czech Olga Barényi´s novel. Janka, the novel from the early 40´s of the 20th century is still ignored by literary public. This work is trying to change this attitude and to demonstrate why this novel can be attractive for the readers. The aim is to make a detailed analysis of the novel, using mainly narrative methodology and to study which means the author uses in the story and if they are unusual or regularly used in the context of Czech period prose.
