Design and verification of an exercise program for children of younger school age focused on flat foot compensation

This thesis deals with the design and validation of an exercise program for younger school-age children that focuses on compensating for flat feet. The theoretical part is more general and the anatomical knowledge of the foot is summarized. It also describes methods of footprint assessment and principles of compensatory exercises. Content analysis, synthesis and two methods of flatfoot impression assessment were used in this thesis-the segment method (Purgaric, 1994) and the method according to Chippaux-Smiriak (Klementa, 1987). This was followed by the design of an exercise program containing 25 exercises aimed at the selected target group. The exercise program was implemented by all seventeen pupils from the first grade of primary school in physical education classes for eight weeks. All pupils also underwent an initial testing. A comparison of the entry and exit tests was carried out for six pupils from this class. These pupils were selected on the basis of demonstrating a reduced vault on entry testing. The exit testing was identical to the entry testing and was conducted under the same conditions. According to the segment method, four out of six pupils improved, and according to the Chippaux-Smirák method, five out of six pupils improved, therefore the design of the exercise programme can be considered successful. This exercise program can be used in physical education classes in primary schools.
