One-day surgery in the patient wiev.
ČEKALOVÁ, Petra
Same-day surgery (one-day surgery, outpatient surgery) is a branch that uses contemporary medical treatments and it offers patients with short terms of hospitalization after a surgery. The same-day surgery schedule is not suitable for all treatments and all patients. There are set the criteria that must be met by a patient so as to be able to undergo the surgery in the same-day surgery mode. There is a list of surgeries that may be performed in the same-day surgery mode. The pre-operative and post-operative care is the same as in case of other surgeries. In most of the cases, the patient is released the day following the surgery and he/she is informed about possible complications and regime measures, he/she must be accompanied and transported. This bachelor thesis is divided into two parts the theoretical and the empiric one. The theoretical part aims at problems of the same-day surgery, at pre-operation and post-operation care for patients. Qualitative research investigations have been used in the bachelor thesis processing. Data collection technique semi-structured interview. The aim of the thesis was: 1. To establish the opinion of patients regarding one-day hospitalization before an operation. 2. To find out the extent of information provided to a patient before planned surgery. 3. To find out the patients´ opinion regarding one-day hospitalization after a surgery. 4. To find out the extent of information provided to a patient when releasing him/her for home care. Five research questions have been set for these purposes: 1. What was the patients´ opinion on one-day hospitalization before planned surgery? 2. Which information was provided to patients before the surgery in one-day surgery mode? 3. What is the patients´ opinion on one-day hospitalization after the planned surgery? 4. Which information was provided to patients at the moment of their release for home care? 5. How do the patients assess the information provided by nurses and doctors at the moment of their release for home care? On the basis of results it was established that the idea of the inquired regarding the one-day surgery included just the surgery and one day of hospitalization. Four of the inquired patients knew the possibility of surgery with one-day hospitalization from their doctors, four patients knew it from other sources. Only three inquired patients were informed before hospitalization about the necessity of arranging their transport and accompaniment after being released. The inquired patients also mostly agreed that they missed the doctors´ round after their surgery and some of them would also appreciate more orally provided information. When detecting the opinions regarding the one-day surgery it proved that all the patients positively assess the care provided. The results of the bachelor thesis could serve for quality improvement of patients´ level of informedness before and after the surgery in one-day surgery mode as well as material for care quality improvement.
