Graptolites of the Šárka Formation (Middle Ordovician, Prague Basin) and their stratigraphical significance
Strossová, Zuzana ; Kraft, Petr (advisor) ; Bruthansová, Jana (referee)
Graptolites are one of the significant groups of stratigraphic index fossils in the Early Palaeozoic. They are used to determine the boundaries between bio- and chronostratigraphical units and to correlate them both on a regional and the global scale. The Šárka Formation, the Middle Ordovician lithostratigraphical unit of the Prague Basin (Teplá-Barrandian Unit), has yielded well-preserved and intensively studied graptolite fauna. Since the first studies carried out more than 100 years ago, much new facts and data has been gathered. They influenced a development and principal changes of the graptolite taxonomy and stratigraphy. Many key specimens were collected during the explorations of iron ore deposits in the vicinities of Rokycany, Ejpovice and Krušná hora Hill. This thesis summarises recent knowledge on graptolites from the Šárka Formation and its utilization in the stratigraphy. Key words: graptolites, Ordovician, Šárka Formation, stratigraphy
