Decorative elements of the Gothic architecture
SZKANDEROVÁ, Aneta
The theoretical part will be devoted to the development of individual decorative elements in the European Gothic architecture. The main emphasis will be placed on the Czech territory, especially on the so-called South Bohemian Gothic. From the decorative elements, the work will focus primarily on the window traverses in connection with the practical part of this work. The aim of the practical part is to create a haptic model of a Gothic window with a decorative tracery, which will be primarily intended for persons with visual disabilities. A specific gothic window from the cloister to the parish court of the Dominican monastery and the Church of the Sacrifice of the Mary, mother of Jesus, in České Budějovice will serve as a template. The resulting model will be made from a drawn gypsum profile and will be accompanied by a set of sketches. At the same time, the haptic model will be part of the exhibition "Haptic models for people with disabilities" in the monastery mentioned above.
Elements of Gothic Literature in the Works by Stephenie Mayer (Twilight Saga), Anne Rice (Vampire Chronicles) and Tim Burton
SODOMKOVÁ, Kristýna
The purpose of this diploma thesis is an analysis of selected texts of three popular American authors (Stephenie Mayer, Anne Rice, Tim Burton), who develop the tradition of Gothic literature in their prose writing and film making. This thesis attempts to show how the particular Gothic elements are used in selected works (ex.: the vampire or monster character, the theme of violence or death). In the introductory theoretical chapter the specific character of Anglo-American Gothic prose is explained, and in the following chapters the separate themes are analysed. In this context the literary influences, as well as the originality of the stories, are considered (Horace Walpole, Mary Shelley, Ch. R. Maturin, Bram Stoker), and the contribution of the analysed texts for the coming development of Gothic literature is assessed.
Gothic Elements in the Novels of the Bronte Sisters
Mikulová, Martina ; Nováková, Soňa (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
Gothic Elements in the Novels of the Brontë Sisters Thesis abstract Gothic fiction, with its eerie atmosphere and mysterious characters, had a great influence on many later authors. That was without a doubt also the case of the Brontë sisters. Emily's Wuthering Heights, with Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Villette, all contain profound elements of the Gothic. One of the most interesting aspects and perhaps the leading element here is the variety of Gothic character types, which can be found in these novels. By their actions, motivations, and even physical appearance, these characters very much contribute to the creation of a Gothic atmosphere in the novels. The Gothic novel genre has been described as relying on stock character types, some of which indeed entered later fiction, and here were variously transformed. The thesis will therefore identify such characters, trace their Gothic history, and consequently focus on analysing their relation with other important stock Gothic attributes - the environment (such as buildings or landscapes) and the elements of the supernatural - and their role in the overall atmosphere of the novels.
