Behaviorální projevy žiraf v zoologických zahradách
Rožnovský, Petr
The aim of the diploma thesis was to evaluate the daily activities of giraffes kept in zoos during individual seasons, to determine differences in the life manifestations of giraffes kept in two zoos, differentiation in the behaviour of giraffe herds depending on the presence of a male, the proportion of giraffes staying indoors and in outdoor enclosures and rumination. 12 activities were evaluated during the seven-hour observation. During the years 2020 to 2022, 30 ethological monitoring were carried out, spread over individual seasons. The re-sults of the ethological study show that giraffes devoted the most time (23%) to food intake. Chewing, nibbling, observing the surroundings, licking objects and walking were also fre-quent activities. Giraffes kept in the Zoo Zlín nibbled, licked objects, and chewed more often. In the Zoo Dvůr Králové, there was more observation of the surroundings, feeding and browsing. Contact with other individuals of the herd was also a frequent activity. The pres-ence of a male influenced the behaviour preferences of the giraffes. It was observed that most often giraffes chew a bite 45-49 times, while the variance of the range of the number of chews varied from 23 to 79.
