Interaction between TiAl metl and coated ceramic crucibles
Dočekalová, Kateřina ; Dlouhý, Antonín ; Zemčík, L. ; Fiala, J.
The present work focused on interactions between TiAl melt and coated oxide refractories. Melting experiments were performed in vacuum induction furnace (VIM technology). The attention is given mainly to reaction interfaces between the melt and ceramics, however, the microstructure of the cast alloy is also taken into account. The analysis is performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDAX. Experimental results were compared with results of thermodynamic calculations that estimated a probability of chemical reactions at the melt-refractory interface. The results indicate that there is an influence of ceramic coatings on the cast microstructure. The detailed composition of the reaction interface and the explanation of reaction mechanisms based on thermodynamic calculations is presented.
Gamma TiAl processing-microstructure-properties relationship
Dočekalová, Kateřina ; Válek, Robert ; Zemčík, L. ; Dlouhý, Antonín
The paper presents results of the optimized melting and casting technology of the TiAl intermetallic components. The metallography analysis contributed to the understanding of the interaction between the intermetallic melt and the crucible wall. A thermodynamic study of the interaction kinetics rationalized the contamination of the melt with ceramic particles.
Metallography of gamma TiAl intermetallic casts
Dlouhý, Antonín ; Válek, Robert ; Svoboda, Milan ; Zemčík, L.
A quantitative metallographic study was performed which focussed on the cast versions of advanced intermetallic alloys based on gamma TiAl phase. Specimens cut out of cast rods and turbine blades exhibited two pronounced microstructural characteristics: (i) a preferential orientation of lamellae in columnar grains below the cast surface and (ii) increasing fraction of equiaxed grains towards the central part of the casts. The relation between the particular microstrucrure and creep strength has been documented.
