Development of the functional autonomy of municipalities in the Prague urban region during the period 1990-2019

5 ABSTRACT The thesis investigates the development of the functional autonomy of municipalities in the Prague hinterland in the period 1991-2020. The dynamic population growth of the Prague hinterland, mainly fuelled by residential suburbanization, led to the strengthening of centripetal movements to work and school at the beginning of the transformation. In the later stages of the study period, this relationship begins to change in favour of a more functionally independent hinterland. The functional autonomy of the municipalities has been monitored at three levels: the deconcentration of employment opportunities in social and commercial services, the development of educational infrastructure, medical and retail amenities, and the evolution of commuting flows between Prague and its hinterland. Both the increase in employment opportunities in social and commercial services and the development of basic amenities point to a significant increase in the functional autonomy of settlements in the hinterland of Prague. However, in terms of work and school commuting, hinterland settlements are still strongly interconnected with the core. At the same time, however, work commuting from the core to the hinterland has increased, suggesting a persistent mismatch between the location of work and home of urban region...
