Music metaphors in Czech and Japanese

This bachelor thesis focuses on musical metaphors in Czech and in Japanese languages used for description of music. In particular on musical metaphors used by music critics in Czech and Japanese music magazines. Metaphorical expressions describe figurative concepts that cannot be described in any other ways than by metaphorical expressions. The thesis focuses on descriptions of emotions and impressions induced in listeners by music, which are subsequently used for description and review of the music itself. The aim of this analysis is the comparison of usage of the examined metaphors in two absolutely different languages and cultures. Theoretical part of the thesis addresses research on conceptual metaphors and music. Practical part of the thesis is based on reviews of the music critics written in Czech and Japanese music magazines about classical music. Chapter 1 presents the introduction to the topic of the thesis and the motivation for the research. In Chapter 2 I focus on the theory of conceptual metaphors, relation of conceptual metaphors to emotions and music theory. In addition, I also explain in more details the main topic of the thesis.
