The Lost Epitaph and Tombstone of Václav Hájek of Libočany
Mezihoráková, Klára
Beginning in the 17th century, the numerous authors of documents about Prague referred to the grave of Václav Hájek of Libočany (the Catholic priest and author of the famous Czech Chronicle, † 1553) with a tombstone and epitaph being located in the Church of Saint Anne at the Convent of Dominican Nuns in the Old Town in Prague. Despite this fact, both monuments disappeared without a trace during the 19th century. While the only information about the tombstone is that it was made of ‘yellow marble’ the descriptions of the epitaph have survived as well as two depictions from the later editions of the Czech Chronicle from 1718 and 1761. In spite of the incomplete documentation, the epitaph presents the best-identified part of the furnishings of the Convent of Saint Anne in Prague. This article points to the surprising fact, that these monuments were not lost in auctions after the cancellation of the monastery in 1782, as one would have expected, but probably nearly a hundred years later.
Picture of the last judgment in Renaissance Bohemia
Hejná, Tereza Rozálie ; Zlatohlávek, Martin (advisor) ; Nespěšná Hamsíková, Magdaléna (referee)
In my bachelor thesis I deal with portrayal of the Last Judgement in the Czech Republic in 15th -16th century. The first part was conceived as an introduction to Last Judgment - the Last judgment as a socio-cultural phenomenon; causes and history showing the last judgment; iconological-iconographic description of the subject. In the second part I'm devoted to the main topic, portrayal of the last judgment in Bohemia in the 15th-16th century. I'm trying to a compendium of all the works of art in our country, and they are especially frescoes. I also deal with the causes of their emergence, seeking their sources of inspiration and subjugation the iconographic-iconographic analysis. Then compare the individual works, not only among themselves but also with older parts that originated outside our area.
Remarks concerning iconography of the epitaph in the Age of Baroque
Muchka, Ivan
Article draws attention to the nearly unknown publications by Johannes Salver from Würzburg, published in the second decade of the 18th Century. There are surveys of church dignitaries in both cathedrals in Würzburg and Bamberg. Some comparisons are made between the preserved epitaphs and the physiognomy of personalities depicted in Salver´s books.
Epitaphs of Peter and Nicolaus Medek
Muchka, Ivan
This article deals, simplifiedly, with the question, how should be appearance of epitaphs, comissioned by the archbishop of Prague Nicolaus Medek – the first one for his predecessor Antonin Brus of Mohelnice, the second for his brother, abbot in Znojmo and the third for himself, judging from the fact, that his epitaph is nearly identical with the gravestone of Brus.
