SMV-2015-10: Development of the electron gun for welding of the radioactive samples

The subject of the project was the research and development of the electron gun for electron beam welding with accelerating voltage 60 kV and maximal power 2 kW. The device was developed for work in so called "hot chamber", where it is exposed to radioactive radiation. The project was characteristic by solving complex problems from different fields and resulted in construction of functional prototype, that was successfully tested in cooperation with the client.

License fee from production and sales of the electron beam welder MEBW-60/2, which research and development was conducted at ISI in years 2006-2008. The device is significantly upgraded version of the electron beam welder developed at ISI during past 20 years. It features a working chamber with volume of 7 liters, an electron gun with accelerating voltage of 60 kV. The beam power is fluently adjustable up to 2 kW. For movement of the welded pieces it is possible to use 2-axis motorized manipulator. The control of the welder is fully digital and all functions are available to user through movable control panel. The device includes work table with work area large enough for needed preparatory work. Spatial arrangement is variable so it allows customization in place of installation.

Coulombian interactions in ion beams

The work deals with computations and optimization of electron(ion)-optical systems, in which the action of spatial charge asserts significantly. The programs CPO and EOD are used for computer simulations. The optimization of geometry of the nozzle of the electron welder is the first of solved tasks.

Temperature controlled cathode heating in the electron gun

The paper describes how the lifetime of the directly heated tungsten cathode can be substantially extended by automatic stabilisation of its temperature measured by its luminance. Further it is shown that the end of the life (the break) of the cathode can be predicted, giving the operating personnel the chance to avoid unexpected break during the experiment.
