Using poetry in teaching German as a foreign language

The thesis deals with how to use poetry in German classes for non-German students. Its objective is with the help of theory to create tentative didactic material which will introduce to upper primary school pupils selected works of poets of the German language, arouse in them interest in reading and writing poetry and show them various ways of reception and comprehension. From the viewpoint of literary theory, the focus is on the poetry of Terezín ghetto and concrete poetry of the 20th and 21st century. From the perspective of literature didactics, the concern is with utilising poetry in German classes. The methods used are primary and secondary sources research, critical assessment and comparison of the sources, text selection, content assessment in terms of length and demandigness followed by didactic adaptation of the texts. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter explains the role of literature in teaching foreign languages, special stress being on poetry and examples from literature written in German. The second chapter is built around poetry written by child and adult authors from Terezín ghetto. The third chapter deals with concrete poetry (and its authors). Didactic adaptation of the novel by Luisa and Lotka by Erich Kästner using a simplified version of Easy readers

The Master's thesis deals with the didactic adaptation of the book Das doppelte Lottchen (Luisa and Lotka) using its simplified version. The introductory part is dedicated to the important stages of the life and work of its author Erich Kästner, especially the period of the Second World War, specifically the years 1943-1949 and the post-war period in which the novel Luisa and Lotka was written. The interpretative part deals with a comparative analysis of the original version of the text and its simplified version Easy Readers published by Klett. Emphasis is placed on the storyline, the characteristics of the main characters, their language and the language of the narrator. The aim is to describe the changes that have been made to the text in order to make it accessible to Readers who are learning German. The didactic adaptation is based on a simplified version of the novel and is intended for teaching in primary school. It offers suggestions for using this simplified text not only in German language classes, but also focuses on various cross-curricular relationships. Wolfgang Herrndorf: Didactic adaptation of novel and film.

This master's dissertation deals with the elaboration of a didactic adaptation of the novel ​Tschick ​by Wolfgang Herrndorf and its film adaptation. The goal of this master's dissertation is to create a complete educational project that is used in a real school curriculum. In the theoretical part, the basic principles for creating such a project are expounded: The terms literature and film in teaching German are explained. Moreover, there are reasons listed why literature and films ought to be a firm part of second language teaching. The literary work ​Tschick ​by Wolfgang Herrndorf is dealt with in the perspective of literary studies. Furthermore, the theoretical and methodological principles are introduced in the purpose of creating such a project. This is implemented in the practical part of this master's dissertation using the novel ​Tschick ​by Wolfgang Herrndorf and its film adaptation as a foundation of this project. Thus, the lesson materials and plans are created that are used at a real school, ​Gymnázium, Praha 6, Arabská 14​, where a group of 17 students, who are at level A2, is chosen for this project.
