The Megalithic Architecture of the Balearic Islands

Talayotic architecture arose on The Balearic Islands at the end of second millennium as a syntesis of local megalithic culture of Bronze Age and cultural influence from central Mediterraen Sea, mainly from Sardinia and Corsica. The core of talayotic buildings was a naveta and megalithic tombs, whose using was abandoned just at the beginning of Iron Age. The talayotic architecture developed on particular way in the manner of the insular cultures of occidental Mediterranean Sea until the Phoenicians arrived; at the same time the construction of talayots declined. On the other hand the sanctuaries and taulas became common. Approximately in the 6th century in post-talayotic period megalithic culture disappeared definitely. The last talayotic site was destroyed during Roman colonization.
