Assessment of Crack Stability in a Quasi-brittle Particle Composite
Malíková, Lucie ; Klusák, Jan ; Keršner, Z.
Fracture behaviour of a crack in a particle (silicate based) composite is studied. The crack propagation depends not only on mutual elastic mismatch of matrix and aggregate but also the influence of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the matrix and the aggregate is discussed. Various combinations of materials and geometry of matrix, aggregate and ITZ can improve or degrade fracture properties of the composite. Extensive numerical simulations on a basic 3-point-bending cracked specimen via the finite element method are performed in order to analyze the stress field near the crack tip. Linear elastic fracture mechanics approach is utilized in order to assess the crack stability and summarize several conclusions.
Estimation of the Critical Stress for Failure of a Protective Layer
Náhlík, Luboš
This contribution describes a study of the behaviour of a crack growing in a protective layer and penetrating through an interface into a substrate. Special attention is devoted to a crack touching the interface. Conditions for the stability of a crack terminating at the interface between two materials are analyzed. The problem is studied under the assumptions of linear-elastic fracture mechanics. A new tentative criterion of stability based on application of the strain energy density concept is formulated and applied to the problem. The suggested criterion is used to estimate the critical applied stress for the failure of a substrate caused by a crack growing through the protective layer. It is shown that the critical stress may strongly depend on the fracture toughness of the substrate and on the bi-material parameters.

Analysis of a crack groving through an interface of two different materials based on crack tip opening displacement
Bareš, Pavel ; Knésl, Zdeněk
Paper describes a study of a crack penetrating the interface between two different elastic materials. The conditions of stability of a crack terminating at the interface are formulated. It is supposed that crack stability is controlled by the corresponding value of the crack tip opening displacement. The resulting critical stresses are compared with those obtained by other approaches. Numerical calculations are performed by finite element method (system ANSYS).
