Transition to Democracy in Czechoslovakia in 1989 from a Transition Theory Perspective

Diploma thesis "Transition to Democracy in Czechoslovakia in 1989 from a Transition Theory Perspective" is an analysis of the Czechoslovak transition to democracy in the year 1989. The author analyses the character of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia and the further development of the country after the year 1989 dealing with some of the more general politological aspects such as the strategies of the participants, analyses of the most important agents and factors of the change, etc. Therefore, various politological theories are introduced in the theoretical part (theory of non-democratic regimes, theory of transition, used theories by Juan J. Linz, Carl J. Friedrich, Alfred Stepan, Samuel Huntington and of other relevant authors). The theories are later applied to the Czechoslovak communist regime and to its transition to democracy. The diploma thesis focuses on the application of the theories of transition on Czechoslovakia with regards to the number of transitions. The work aims at explaining that more transitions took place in Czechoslovakia - not only the political one, but also the economic and nationalist, the latter leading to the Czechoslovakian split. Communist regime propaganda against the Catholic church in Czechoslovakia

in English This paper describes the development of relationship between catholic church and communist regime in Czechoslovakia from the start of communist reign to the Velvet Revolution. Author focuses on communist persecution against the catholic church and on the propaganda of this persecution in media. Special attention is dedicated to describing the context of the clash between these two ideologies in the history of Czechoslovakia so that this paper can give the most accurate picture of the practices of communist regime. The first part is focused on era from the end of second world war to the year 1968, giving the most attention to era 1948-1953, a period that contained the most persecution. The second part tells the story of the normalization period from the Warsaw Pact invasion to Czechoslovakia in 1968 to the Velvet revolution, in which the catholic church played a significant role.

Political trials led by the communist regime against women in the case of Milada Horáková, Fráňa Zemínová and Antonie Kleinerová and their media representation in the Czech press of the time

The aim of this thesis is to analyze media reprezentation of three women in the trial Milada Horáková et al. in May and June 1950 concocted by four Czech leading Daily Newspapers of the time. It tries to evaluate the picture of women as an enemy for the communist regime. This Soviet style show trial represents some of the worst excesses of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in the fifties. In the theoretical part, it describes political, economical and social changes after the Communist takeover in February 1948. It points out the reasons for establishing and designing political trials in Czechoslovakia. The practical part represents the results of a basic quantitative analysis focused on size and its comparision of media attention of Milada Horáková, Frána Zemínová and Antonie Kleinerová in each newspaper and an interpretation of all different pictures of these women which the media offered to the public. This thesis reveals how the communist propaganda was used to identify the class enemy and then misused it to manipulate a public perception.

Augustin Komanec (1885-1953)

This thesis deals with the life story of Augustin Komanec, dean of Slaný, a man standing among many other anonymous priests who were persecuted for their firm human and Christian attitudes towards the Church and its bishops in the early 1950's. Augustin Komanec was one of those tried by the totalitarian communist regime in fabricated trials. He was not sentenced to death, nevertheless the stiffness of the punishment led to the ultimate sacrifice. He died soon after he had been sent to the communist prison in Mírov. Based on documents available, the work presents Komanec's both civil and clerical life from 1885 to 1948 and then from the communist coup to his death in 1953. The aim of the work is to present the destiny of this brave person, who refused to give in to the totalitarian power and who represented the real enemy of this power: the Church, courageous and free.

Alžběta Vašáková DEPARTMENT: Social Sciences and Philosophy Department SUPERVISOR: Prof. PhDr. Jan Županič, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis chronologically describes the life and career of the communist prosecutor Josef Urválek from his birth in České Budějovice, through the university studies at the Faculty of Law of the Charles University in Prague, the work in the First Republic, post-war and communist judiciary to the politically motivated end of his career in the Czechoslovak judicature. The thesis focuses on his activities at the Exeptional people's court in České Budějovice and at the same time at the State court in Prague during the most well-known but also less-known political lawsuits in the fifties. The last chapter is about the reflection of this unlawfulness during the political releasing in the sixties and about his understanding of the personal and legal accountability in the position of the state attorney of the communist judicature. Rebellious intellectual in changing times - Dominik Tatarka and its involvement in the dissident movement

The aim of the diploma thesis is to give the most objective and comprehensive view of the personality of Dominika Tatarka primarily from the historical perspective, but also from a literary critical perspective. The view of the creation will, as far as possible, be done in cross-section, with an accent on the autobiographical features of the work, demonstrating a radical view of the communist regime. Emphasis will be given, in particular, to the period of the 70s and 80s of the 20th century with relevant time transitions. The historical perspective will seek to bring the role of the writer's community in the reform movement of the sixties of the 20th century in a wider context and to clarify the specifics of Slovak dissent, with emphasis on the position of Dominika Tatarka in it.

Critical responses of written and musical creation of Vratislav Brabenec

The Bachelor's Thesis "Critical Responses of the Written and Musical Work of Vratislav Brabenec " analyses samizdat collections, Czechoslovak and foreign periodicals as well as internet articles reacting to the life's work and personality of this musician, poet and a representative of the Czechoslovak underground. The thesis starts by forming a biographical and historical context and briefly introducing other protagonists of the underground. It then explains the underground and dissent as well as the difference between these two terms. The main body of the work is constituted by the compilation of the reception in the media of the writings, music and life of the artist. Furthermore, it captures the event of the 1976 trial that lead to the imprisonment of Vratislav Brabenec, both from the point of view of his contemporaries, who were keeping letters in samizdat form, and the representatives of the StB, who lead the case against the underground authors and wrote reports capturing the court proceedings. The author of this thesis then conducts research in both Czechoslovak and exile press and samizdat. Czech esoterics in the transformation of contemporary history

The main aim of this thesis is to contribute to the enlargement of the knowledge base about the crucial historic period of the -Velvet Revolution‖ and the subsequent transition period. The key sources were interviews with the professional and interest groups of active esoterics, performed using the oral history method. The text is also based on information from The National Archive, the Czech Television archive, the The Archive of Security Forces and relevant literature. Given the specific nature of this topic, this thesis reflects the impact of the new social order in the period after 1989 on the professional and private life of the selected sample of narrators and offers a view on the interaction between the witnesses and the state and the general public. Another aim of this research was to extend the existing knowledge about the esoteric scene in the period after 1989. Nevertheless, it does not aspire to provide a definitive list of various esoteric disciplines in the early transformation period. Additional topics concerning the socialist dictatorship are included to provide a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon. This part analyses the attitude of the communist ideology to esoterism.
