Alternative communication in homes for handicaped persons
SVAČINOVÁ, Jana
This work deals with problems of taking advantage of the augmentative and alternative communication (hereinafter referred to as AAC) with clients in homes for patients with combined handicap. The target of my work was to get relevant information concerning AAC in homes for handicapped people and to create well working methodical instructions for employees in the direct care in the institutions where they work. The theoretical part of my work defines the terms of alternative an augmentative communication and describes briefly the used communication systems or tools, further it describes individual institutions, where I carried out my investigation. The practical part of my work describes the target of my work and works up the reasons for introducing the AAC into the institutions, where the patients are staying. To implement the investigation I have chosen the qualitative research, which is a method of questioning, semi-structured interviews and in-depth discussions. The own investigation proceeded in a direct form of discussions with clients, their nurses or guardians, with the employees in direct care and people in social services responsible for the given institution. As the results of my work show, the AAC problems in institutions for permanent stay of patiens are often neglected, before an accreditation commission or any supervision draws an attention to it. There is no unified methodology, very often the opinion on the introduction of the AAC into practical life differs, the employees work on the basis of their intuition and a system in such attitude lies on the side of special teachers or therapeutics, not on the side of the employees, who spend most of their time with the clients. The problems is as well that the employees are not sufficiently trained and last but not least the financial demand for some tools.
