Seniors' Attitudes to Domestic Violence
VOLFOVÁ, Markéta
The diploma thesis is concerned with the problem of domestic violence from the perspective of the elderly people. The work consists of the theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part is divided into the three main parts. The first and the most challenging part is focused on the domestic violence term itself. The historical context overlapping today society situation is described in the introduction. The related development of the legislation in the Czech Republic is mentioned in the work as well. The causes leading to domestic violence are specified there too. The effects of these causes are evident, thus from the psychological, physical and economical perspectives. The participants, victims altogether with aggressors are discussed at the end of the first part. In terms of the victims the attention is mostly paid to the domestic violence committed against the elderly people. The second part deals with the definition of the term senior. This part includes the societal attitudes towards the elderly people and the problem related - ageism. The conclusion of the theoretical part is focused on the attitudes - their facets, segments and functions. The empirical part includes its own research, which has the crucial aim to find out the opinions of the elderly people on domestic violence in terms of gender. Another objective is to ascertain whether the respondents have plenty of information about this societal phenomenon. The quantitative strategy was chosen for this research. As a technique of the data collection was used a questionnaire of a specific structure. After the inspection and the following elimination of several entries respectable 227 questionnaires were used for the research. The collection of the data took place in the time period from January 2020 till March 2020. Based on the research not even half of the respondents are informed enough about the issue. Another thing which was ascertained is that the respondents' opinions on domestic violence are still to a certain extent influenced by stereotypes which are related to this topic. The relevance of gender and embrace of these biased and untrue claims was not approved though, as statistics testing suggests. The research proved true that men are more benevolent about the domestic violence than women, tend to keep it in secret and are likely to fix the potential problems without any help from the outside.
