The aim of this bachelor's degree thesis is to introduce the beginnings, shaping and history of the Prague Portuguese studies until the year 1989. The text is a result of comparison of different historical sources with memories of former students and lecturers. The first chapter is concerned with the status of Portuguese studies at the Institute of Romance Studies and the work of the first teachers who struggled to implement language courses and Portuguese as a major discipline. Following chapters describe the structure of the field of study and the teaching staff, including individual portraits as well as lecturersʼ biography.
