Being a gentleman in Dickens's Great Expectations

The goal of this work is to analyse the concept of gentlemanliness in Dickens's novel Great Expectations. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, we will describe the image of the society of Victorian England and the life conditions and prospects of people belonging to different social classes. After that, the status of a gentleman alongside with crucial parts of his life is depicted. In the second part, the thesis seeks to examine the work Great Expectations which is firstly compared with three other Dickens's novels. Afterwards, we follow the development of the main hero Pip, a poor orphan, who becomes a gentleman. The work then presents factors which caused the transformation of his character consisting of experience together with the novel's characters who affected his attitude towards life and human values. Finally, the author deals with the transformation of the main hero's view of the concept of gentlemanliness, the society, the importance of social position and life priorities.

Reflection of Social, Economic and Cultural Changes in Britain in Selected Early Victorian Fiction

The thesis "The Reflection of Social, Economic and Cultural Changes in Britain in Selected Early Victorian Fiction" aims to investigate the relationship between the First Industrial Revolution in the Great Britain and the English fiction of this era. It deals with the question if the selected authors reflected major industrial and social changes in their writing and if so, what particular events they described. Further, it is focused on the relationship between the novelists and their works, in other words, if there is any connection between their class origin and their point of view of the social problematic displayed in particular novels. It also tries to find out if the prose writers identified themselves with their novel characters and/or if they projected their own life experience into their stories. The work concerns with literary movements represented in selected early Victorian novels: Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, Hard Times, Oliver Twist and The Personal History of David Copperfield the Younger and William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Victorian London through the Perspective of Charles Dickens

The aim of the thesis is the initial characteristics of Charles Dickens' personality in the context of Victorian literature focusing later on social matters of the 19th century England and its reflection in the works of the author. The core of the thesis concentrates on Dickens´s description of London in the contrast with rural environment; and prospectively it may generalize Dickens' methods in description of environment and landscape based on the principles of romantic and realistic novels.
