Development of the ‚Mafia' Topic in the Italian Literature from the Risorgimento to the Present Day

The theme of the thesis is the development of the mafia theme in Sicilian literature from the unification of Italy up to the present day. The author does the analysis of the works Golden Key and Master Don Gesualdo by Giovanni Verga, the novel The Old and the Young by Luigi Pirandello, The Day of the Owl by Leonard Sciascia and È stato il figlio by Robert Alajmo. Based on this analysis, the author studies how and if the writers compose the theme of the mafia in their works, and which motives and elements recur. The author focuses not only on the criminal organization itself but also on certain behavioral patterns corresponding to the character of its members. In conclusion, the author compares the results of the partial analyzes and summarizes how the mafia theme is developed on the basis of these works.
