Holistic approach to nursing care in the context of the sensory activation
ŠVEJDOVÁ, Kristýna
The number of clients with dementia is increasing every day. This serious mental illness is becoming a society-wide problem of older people. The most frequent degenerative illness of the brain is Alzheimer disease. Most facilities of social service offer various activities for self-sufficient and oriented clients. What activations are aimed to the clients who suffer from dementia? In many cases there are none. As a consequence, the clients are limited in their mental and physical area. Sense activation represents a modern concept which tries to help not only older clients, but also people with dementia. It wants to influence the human senses which are the right way to his/her sources. It tries to satisfy all client needs during the direct nursing care by the targeted support. The qualitative research with the usage of the method of structural, participant observation was used for the practical part of my work. The research was conducted in the old people home which uses the concept of Sense activation and in the old people home without this concept. The aim of the Thesis was to describe the ways of satisfaction of the needs of the client with the dementia of Alzheimer type in the context of common nursing care and the care provided in the context of Sense activation concept according to Lore Wehner. It emerged from the research that the care provided according to the concept of Sense activation satisfies the needs of older clients and the people with dementia on a high level. It is possible to observe positive changes in all areas of a person when the activation is used. The care which is provided in the old people´s home without this concept satisfies the needs of clients. However, it was discovered that it is necessary to focus the care also on the psycho-social needs that are important to saturate during the direct nursing care. The target of the Thesis is not to compare or deduce any conclusions. Its effort is to show the newer approach which brings many positive changes in the direct nursing care of older people and of the people with dementia.
