The Positives and Negatives of Romany Businesses in the Context of Social Work
SHONOVÁ, Květa
This bachelor theses deals with the positives and negatives of running a business that Romany citizens tend to face. Romas belong to one of the most numerous ethnic minorities in the Czech Republic. They have been struggling for social independence and equal rights since the Velvet Revolution of 1989. This is obvious also in the area of private enterprise. In the area of employment of Romas, Romany business-people represent specific subjects not only as self-employed people, but also as potential employers who ought to have the same starting position in the labour market. The bachelor thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The first one deals with basic terminology, information and facts about the background and the origin of Romas, the structure of this ethnic group as well as their development in historical context. This part also contains a description of the current state of Romany population in the Czech Republic, their position in the labour market, their relationship with the majority population, but also contemporary trends in the area of social work focused on the minority issues. The practical part focuses on the main goal, which was mapping social, economic and health attributes connected with the Romany business activity, especially in the context of social work. A partial goal was the analysis of possible problems connected with their business activity and the attitude of the majority to Romany business. With the means of in-depth non-structured interviews two issues were addressed: Is there a prevailing opinion in the target population that it is difficult for a Romany person to run a business, to get contracts and customers' trust? Do Romany businesspeople face prejudices in the context of their work activity, and if so, which ones? The studied group consisted of six people of Romany origin whose source of income comes from business or other form of self-employment. This work undertakes to attract attention to Romany businesspeople, who have taken fate into their own hands. The findings may be used in projects dealing with employment support of socially disadvantaged people as well as in monitoring social situation of Romany minority in the Czech Republic.
