Prevence výskytu koňského astmatu
SCHWARZOVÁ, Vanda
Equine asthma is a relatively common non-treatable non-infectious lung disease, known in the past as COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, EAS - equine asthma syndrome, etc. The main causes are improper housing, dusty feeding and genetic predisposition. The aim of the present bachelor thesis was to elaborate current information on equine asthma based on available domestic and foreign literature sources, to focus on the possibilities of preventing this disease in horses and to evaluate the prevalence of equine asthma. Based on the evaluation of 116 horses, it was found that 22% of the horses were asthmatic. Their mean age of 16.6 years is statistically significantly higher (p-value < 0.01) than the age of healthy horses (8.8 years). The first signs of asthma were recorded at an average age of 10.6 years. The lowest proportion of asthmatic horses was observed in box housing (10%), 23% in active housing and 18% in pasture housing. The highest proportion of sick horses was in outdoor stalls (33%). With 65%, the prevalence of classical asthma was higher than that of pasture asthma (31%). The largest group of asthmatic horses was no longer actively used (37%), 27% were used in lower sport and the same percentage in high sport. The fewest horses were included in breeding, at 9%. This work shows that prevention of the disease is most important. In the event of an asthma outbreak, early detection and the establishment of proper management, which includes, in particular, the elimination of dust from the environment and feeding, is essential. Then the horse can continue to be used.
